Police described Liam Payne’s Buenos Aires hotel room as being in “total disorder” after his death, reporting broken items and medications inside. That description records what officers said they saw; it does not establish how the room became that way or explain the fall that killed him.
What police said they found in the room
In a statement quoted by ITV News, police said: “Upon entering, total disorder was observed, with various elements broken”. The account described the condition of the room when officers entered after Payne’s death; it did not identify who or what caused the damage.
Police reportedly noted over-the-counter medication and clonazepam in the room. A bottle of whiskey, a lighter and a mobile phone were reported in the hotel atrium. These are reported scene items, not a complete inventory, and their presence alone does not establish what happened before the fall.
What the scene description does—and does not—show
Officers also examined the balcony and collected evidence as part of their scene work, according to ITV’s report. “Total disorder” is a description, not a finding about Payne’s state of mind, his intentions or the precise sequence of events. The reported items and room condition should not be treated as proof of any of those things.

Before the fall, a hotel employee had called emergency services with concern about a guest’s behaviour and safety, according to Reuters reporting republished by News24. That call provides context for the emergency response; it does not by itself establish intent.
How this differs from the initial autopsy findings
Payne, 31, died on 16 October 2024 after falling from a third-floor balcony at the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires. The initial autopsy account attributed his death to multiple injuries and internal and external bleeding caused by the fall, according to Reuters material republished by ThePrint.

The police description concerns the condition of the room and objects reported at the scene. The autopsy concerns the injuries that caused death. They are separate kinds of evidence and do not, on their own, resolve why Payne fell.

Later reporting summarized toxicology findings, a subsequent judicial account of the fall and changes in charges. Those developments belong to a later stage of the investigation, not to the original police statement about the room. A report hosted on a BBC mirror domain is the available basis here for those later details; without corroboration from an authoritative court or prosecutor source, they should be treated cautiously rather than as settled findings. The report does not change what the phrase “total disorder” establishes: only the police-reported condition of the room.

A 2025 report said the UK inquest had been delayed while authorities awaited evidence from Argentina. That report does not establish the inquest’s status as of 4 October 2026, so no current-status conclusion follows from it. The 2025 report should be read within that date limitation.
