Alien: Romulus fits between Alien and Aliens in the story chronology. That placement gives the film room to tell a new story in the period between the two saga chapters, while its retro-futurist technology suits that era. The available reporting supports this explanation, but does not establish it as director Fede Álvarez’s single definitive reason.
Where Alien: Romulus fits in the timeline
The story order is Alien → Alien: Romulus → Aliens. The original Alien was released in 1979, and Aliens followed in 1986, but release dates are not the same as the films’ fictional chronology. The Los Angeles Times discusses Romulus as occupying the interval between those saga chapters: its August 7, 2024, coverage places the film in that established period.

Den of Geek reports Álvarez describing the film as taking place 20 years after the first Alien. That reported interval is consistent with the gap before Aliens; it is a chronology detail, not a separate explanation of why the filmmakers chose the setting. See Den of Geek’s timeline breakdown.
Why that slot makes sense for the film
It gives the story a place between two established chapters
Setting the film in the interval lets it add a new chapter without moving the events of either earlier film. The studio describes the premise as young space colonizers scavenging a derelict station and encountering a dangerous life form. That setup establishes what the characters face, though it does not itself explain the chronology. The official 20th Century Studios film page provides the premise and production details.

- This truly terrifying sci-fi horror-thriller takes the legendary ?Alien? franchise back to its iconic roots. While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young colonizers come face-to-face with the deadliest life form in the universe. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
The period supports its retro-futurist technology
The Los Angeles Times describes Romulus’ technology as retro and appropriate to the film’s place in the franchise’s period. That design context helps explain why the in-between setting works on screen: the movie can draw on the technological look associated with the earlier saga era. It does not prove that visual design was the only, or original, reason for choosing that timeline position.

Álvarez’s emphasis on horror and practical effects is useful production context, but it should not be mistaken for an explanation of the timeline. In an Associated Press report about the film, he describes a practical-effects challenge: “It’s not an easy CG thing to create,” he said. “It’s like it has to be practical.” The quote concerns effects work, not the decision to place the story between Alien and Aliens. The AP also reports on the film’s horror focus; read its interview and report. The Walt Disney Company likewise discusses Álvarez’s approach to horror in its interview with the director.
