When Did Gege Akutami Decide Gojo’s Fate in Jujutsu Kaisen?

Reports place Gege Akutami’s decision about Gojo’s fate during work on the Shibuya Incident arc, not necessarily at the beginning of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Spoilers for the Jujutsu Kaisen manga. According to reports on a 2026 seminar for aspiring manga artists, Gege Akutami settled Gojo Satoru’s fate while working on the Shibuya Incident arc—not necessarily when the series began. That distinction matters: Akutami had reportedly planned the story’s broad ending and major stages, but kept the route between them flexible.

What did Akutami reportedly reveal?

Two Portuguese-language reports published June 29, 2026, say Akutami discussed considering the deaths of one of the four central characters and ultimately choosing Gojo while working on the Shibuya Incident arc. The reports cite GameRant, and the seminar’s transcript or recording was not available in the reporting reviewed. The account should therefore be treated as secondary reporting, not as Akutami’s verified verbatim words. (Reports summarized here.)

The Shibuya Incident spans manga chapters 79–136, according to O Vício’s report, and was serialized from October 2019 to January 2021. Gojo’s death comes later, during the battle with Sukuna in chapter 236, published in September 2023, according to the same secondary coverage.

Was Gojo’s death planned from the beginning?

The available accounts do not establish that Akutami had fixed Gojo’s specific fate from the start of serialization. An earlier interview summary says he had planned the broad ending and main story stages, while leaving considerable flexibility in how the story would reach them. A decision made during the Shibuya work fits that distinction: an author can have an overall destination in mind and make a particular character decision later. (Earlier interview summary.)

So “planned all along” is too broad if it means Gojo’s death had been decided before the manga began. The more precise reported claim is that Akutami chose Gojo’s fate during the development of Shibuya.

What has Akutami said about Gojo’s ending and the Sukuna fight?

The Volume 26 cover

A separate 2024 report attributes to Akutami a description of the Jujutsu Kaisen Volume 26 cover as a “death portrait” for Gojo. It also reproduces his remark: “I psyched myself up saying, ‘I’m going to draw a death portrait of Gojo!!!’” The report says he chose sasanqua-like flowers after Gojo lost. This is a later comment about the cover and its imagery; it does not independently confirm when Akutami chose Gojo’s fate. (2024 report.)

Why Gojo lost to Sukuna

The same report relays an exhibition Q&A in which Akutami reportedly said Gojo believed Sukuna had no way left to bypass Limitless after Mahoraga was defeated, so Gojo let his guard down. Under ordinary circumstances, he might have sensed the danger and avoided a fatal injury. This account is translated secondary reporting: the exhibition was in Japan, and the report says no official translation was provided to global readers. It concerns the mechanics of the final battle, not the timing of the decision to kill Gojo.

What the evidence supports—and what it does not

  • Supported by the 2026 reports: Akutami reportedly chose Gojo’s fate while working on Shibuya, after considering which of four central characters to kill.
  • Not established: that Gojo’s death was fixed from the beginning of the series, or that the seminar reports reproduce Akutami’s exact words.
  • Separate context: the cover-art remark and the account of Gojo’s lapse against Sukuna are later, distinct comments, not proof of the Shibuya-era decision.

For readers following the manga, Volume 26 is the volume connected in the reporting to Akutami’s cover-art comment and the events under discussion.
