Redbox’s DVD-rental kiosk service shut down in July 2024 as its parent company’s bankruptcy cases moved into liquidation. The cases did not begin as Chapter 7: Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment and affiliated entities filed for Chapter 11 protection in June, and the court converted the cases to Chapter 7 in July.
What happened to Redbox?
Redbox was best known for renting DVDs through kiosks. Its kiosk rental service ended in July 2024 amid the bankruptcy of its parent, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment. Contemporary coverage reported the shutdown and described Redbox’s kiosk network as numbering in the tens of thousands, but the company’s 36,000-kiosk figure dates to 2022, not the closure.
The bankruptcy and shutdown are related parts of the same collapse, but they are distinct events: the company and affiliated entities first sought Chapter 11 protection, then the court converted their cases to Chapter 7 liquidation.
Who owned Redbox?
Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment completed its acquisition of Redbox Entertainment Inc. on August 11, 2022, according to the company’s acquisition announcement filed with the SEC. The parent’s announcement described a combined business with more than 40 million loyalty members, a streaming catalog of more than 51,000 titles across the services it cited, more than 145 free live-TV channels, and 36,000 Redbox kiosks. Those were company-reported figures at the time of the acquisition, not current measures of Redbox at shutdown.

Did Redbox file Chapter 7 or Chapter 11?
The sequence was Chapter 11 first, then Chapter 7. On June 29, 2024, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment and affiliated entities filed Chapter 11 petitions in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. The filing list included Redbox Automated Retail, LLC, Redbox Entertainment, LLC, and Redbox Holdings, LLC.
In July, the cases were converted to Chapter 7, the bankruptcy chapter associated with liquidation. An Inforuptcy docket index records the conversion order as signed July 10 and entered July 11, 2024. The June 29 petition identifies the initial Chapter 11 filing and the Redbox-related debtors.

What happened to the kiosks and Redbox’s other services?
The kiosk DVD-rental operation shut down. The 36,000 figure often associated with Redbox describes the company’s network in its August 2022 acquisition announcement; it should not be read as the number of kiosks operating when the service closed. Coverage around the shutdown reported lower figures, and the available sources do not establish an independent, precise closure-date count.
The kiosk shutdown does not, by itself, establish what happened to every Redbox app account, streaming service, digital purchase, or customer record. The sources documenting the closure and bankruptcy do not resolve those separate questions, so it would be unsafe to infer an account or purchase outcome from the end of kiosk rentals alone.

- June 29, 2024: The parent and affiliated entities, including Redbox subsidiaries, filed for Chapter 11 protection in Delaware.

The Delaware bankruptcy court later listed an opinion and order dated September 2, 2026, in litigation brought by the Chapter 7 trustee. That entry shows later litigation activity connected with the case; it does not establish that Redbox resumed operations or that every bankruptcy matter was still open.
