Flow never explains what happened to humanity. Director Gints Zilbalodis has offered a personal interpretation: humans knew the flood was coming and left. That is an illuminating clue, not a definitive answer—the film leaves the question open for viewers.
What does Flow show about humanity?
Flow is a 2024 animated feature directed by Gints Zilbalodis. It follows a cat and other animals navigating a world transformed by a major flood. Humans are absent, and the film does not explain where they went or what caused the disaster. The Associated Press review likewise notes that the cause of the flood is never explained (Associated Press, December 6, 2024).

What did the director say happened to the humans?
Zilbalodis’s personal interpretation is that people were aware of the coming flood and left. In an excerpt from a November 21, 2024 Slant interview reproduced in a Sacrebleu Productions press-review PDF, he says that viewers are left to think about the humans’ fate, adding that he imagines they knew about the flood and left (Sacrebleu Productions press-review PDF).
That distinction matters: the director presents this as his own reading, not a plot fact confirmed by the film. It suggests an evacuation rather than establishing whether everyone escaped, where they went, or what happened afterward.

Are there clues that prove what happened?
The film’s flooded setting and absent people invite questions, but the available sources do not establish a specific visual clue that proves a complete backstory. The Festival de Cannes profile describes the animals sharing a small boat after a terrible flood, while Cineuropa notes that the film has neither dialogue nor humans (Festival de Cannes, May 22, 2024; Cineuropa, May 23, 2024). Neither supplies a definitive account of humanity’s fate.
Is Flow a climate-change or ecological allegory?
Viewers and critics may read the disaster as ecological or climate-related, and the AP review frames the film as a climate parable. That is an interpretation of the work, not an explanation supplied by the story: the flood’s cause remains unstated. Zilbalodis’s reported comment addresses what he imagines people did once they knew about the flood, not why it happened.

The absence keeps attention on the animals’ experience and on how they respond to a changed world. Cannes’s interview also connects the cat’s movement from independence toward cooperation with Zilbalodis’s own experience of making a film with a technical team. That context speaks to the film’s interest in working together; it does not resolve the humans’ fate.
The most grounded answer is therefore deliberately limited: the film leaves humanity’s story unresolved, while its director imagines that people saw the flood coming and left. Whether viewers accept that explanation—or read the empty world differently—is part of the question the film leaves open.
