Sean “Diddy” Combs told a Manhattan federal judge, “I’m sorry your honor, I’m a little nervous today,” during jury selection on May 5, 2025. Weeks later, a jury note about one juror’s ability to follow instructions interrupted deliberations for a day—not a final deadlock. The jury returned a mixed verdict the next day, and Judge Arun Subramanian sentenced Combs to 50 months in prison on October 3.
What happened during jury selection?
Jury selection began May 5, 2025, in Manhattan federal court. Prospective jurors were screened for impartiality in a case expected to include graphic evidence. During the process, Combs briefly interrupted proceedings for a bathroom break and apologized to the judge, saying he was “a little nervous today,” according to The Associated Press.
Testimony began the following week. The trial included 34 witnesses, AP reported as deliberations began on June 30. Courtroom accounts often relied on sketches: AP noted that federal courtrooms do not allow electronic recordings, so courtroom sketch artists provided the public’s visual record.
Which well-known witnesses testified?
- Casandra “Cassie” Ventura: The R&B singer and Combs’s former girlfriend testified for the prosecution.
- Jane: A witness who testified under a pseudonym. Her identity should not be inferred from that name.
- Kid Cudi: The rapper testified as a witness.
- Dawn Richard: The singer also testified.
These names identify witnesses, not defendants. Testimony and allegations presented at trial are distinct from what the jury ultimately found; the verdict addressed the specific charges before it.

Why were deliberations interrupted?
Jurors began deliberating on June 30. The foreperson sent a note saying the panel was concerned that one juror might not follow the judge’s instructions. The judge reminded jurors to deliberate and follow the law. The first day ended without a verdict, and the jury reached its decision the following day.
The episode is best understood as a one-day interruption amid deliberations, not proof of a final deadlock or a finding that a juror was unable to follow instructions. Reuters reported that jurors were anonymous, a practice used in high-profile cases when harassment or threats are a concern. The public record described here does not establish the juror’s identity, motives, or later service.

What was the verdict on each charge?
| Charge | Jury’s finding |
|---|---|
| Racketeering conspiracy | Acquitted |
| Two sex-trafficking counts | Acquitted on both |
| Two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution | Guilty on both |
The result was mixed: Combs was neither convicted of sex trafficking nor cleared of every charge. The jury found him guilty on the two transportation counts and acquitted him of racketeering conspiracy and both sex-trafficking charges.
