Kathie Lee Gifford said she fractured her pelvis in two places after falling down stairs while recovering from hip-replacement surgery. In an August 13, 2024 appearance on Today, she said a follow-up X-ray showed she had healed; she recounted her doctor calling the result a “miracle.” Those details describe Gifford’s personal account, not a typical recovery timeline.
What happened to Kathie Lee Gifford?
Gifford said she was recovering from hip-replacement surgery when she fell down the stairs at home. In her later account, she said she hurried down to help a friend who was locked outside in the heat, went too fast in unsuitable shoes and tumbled. She described the injury as fractures in two places in her pelvis.
In a July 31, 2024 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Gifford also said she had overexerted herself with book signings and travel as she began feeling better after surgery. Contemporary coverage reported that she was hospitalized following the fall.
What was her initial recovery like?
Gifford told Entertainment Tonight she was home after a week in the hospital and said, “I’m doing well!” She also said she was glad to be home after staff had taken good care of her. The Los Angeles Times reported that she had told People she was hospitalized for more than a week for physical therapy.

In an August 13, 2024 update on Today, Gifford said she had been walking with a walker at home. She then noticed that her pain had stopped and went for follow-up imaging. According to Parade, she said her doctor told her the X-ray showed she was healed and described the doctor’s reaction as calling it a “miracle.”
Gifford also attributed part of her recovery to prayers from supporters, as reported by Parade. The account of the X-ray and the doctor’s reaction comes from Gifford’s public remarks; the treating doctor did not provide a separate statement in the cited coverage.

Does her recovery show how quickly pelvic fractures usually heal?
No. The reports describe one person’s experience and do not establish how common or medically typical that course is.
