Yes. Aalto University opened the Nokia Design Archive’s free public online portal on 15 January 2025. It offers a curated way to explore Nokia Mobile Phones design material—from sketches and photographs to interviews, videos, and stories—but it is not a complete catalogue or a physical exhibition. The wider repository and any request to consult physical items are handled separately through Aalto University Archives.
What you can see in the public portal
The archive presents design work and the people behind it through several kinds of material. An entry might be an object, report, presentation, photograph, drawing, or video. Related entries are gathered into collections, while stories include anecdotes, interviews, and career information. Entries can also lead to original archival content in the Aalto Repository.
For browsing, the portal includes a network view that groups entries into thematic collections and shows relationships, and a timeline that organizes designers chronologically. The timeline represents more than 300 designers; the portal says around 250 have documented anecdotes, interviews, or other donated data. These are portal descriptions, not counts of every designer who worked at Nokia.
What the archive covers—and what the figures mean
Aalto describes the material’s broad design-history span as the mid-1990s through 2017. The associated project describes its focus as Nokia design from 1995 to 2015; those are related but distinct date ranges, so neither should be treated as a precise date range for every item.

Aalto’s 2025 project account distinguishes the curated portal from the much larger body of archival material:
| Part of the archive | Scale Aalto reports | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Curated public portal | Over 700 entries | A researcher-selected set for browsing and context, not a comprehensive catalogue. |
| Uncurated material | Over 20,000 items | The wider body of material, which can be searched through Aalto University Archives. |
| Born-digital files | 959 GB | Aalto’s reported file volume; it is not a count of entries or objects. |
Aalto warns that the portal selection is not necessarily representative of the thousands of records in the complete archive, and not every designer has an entry. It works best as an interpretive doorway for discovery rather than proof that a particular design or person is absent from Nokia’s history.

How to search beyond the selection
- Start with the portal: browse its entries, collections, stories, network view, or timeline to find material and themes of interest.
- For fuller coverage, contact Aalto University Archives: Aalto says the wider uncurated material can be searched through the Archives. Ask the Archives about access to specific records or physical items.
- Confirm the terms for your intended use: Aalto says archival material is licensed for research, education, and museum purposes. Its guidance requests attribution when information is available, including the designer, design name, year, and Aalto Repository URL. Check the archive’s current instructions before reproducing any material.
The online portal is freely accessible; this does not mean that the whole repository is downloadable or that physical records are available for walk-in viewing. The portal is hosted by Aalto University in Finland. Aalto says the project was made possible by donations from Microsoft Mobile Oy and designers; that history does not make the archive a current Nokia service or imply Nokia ownership.

The project grew out of efforts to preserve design materials that might otherwise have been lost. In an Aalto University Magazine article published on 14 May 2025, Anna Valtonen, identified as the project’s lead researcher, recalled that Nokia’s Keilaniemi headquarters in Espoo was being cleared in 2016: “The headquarters in Keilaniemi, Espoo, was being cleared out, and Microsoft wanted to get rid of everything,” she said. Aalto design historian Kaisu Savola has described how the project’s emphasis broadened from objects to the people connected with them: “When we started the project, the focus was on objects. As we began going through the material, we soon realised that it was about people.”
