Cheryl Hines said in December 2025 that she did not expect her husband, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., to run for president in 2028. Months later, Kennedy gave a direct answer of his own: on May 7, 2026, he said, “No, I’m not going to run.” His statement is the clearest answer available, but it is a dated position rather than a guarantee about what he may say or do later.
What did Cheryl Hines say about RFK Jr. running for president?
During a December 2025 appearance on NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas Reports, Hines was asked whether Kennedy would run in 2028 and whether she was ready for another campaign. The Guardian reported Vargas’s question as: “Is your husband going to run for president in 2028? And, if so, are you ready for that?” The Guardian’s December 9 account says Hines answered that she did not think he would run.
TheWrap quoted Hines saying, “Oh my gosh, he’s not gonna run for president in 2028.” She also acknowledged that Kennedy had surprised her before by moving into politics, so she was expressing her expectation—not announcing a decision on his behalf. TheWrap’s December 8 report describes her comments about the scrutiny and attacks that follow a campaign announcement.
What did Kennedy later say about running in 2028?
In an interview on May 7, 2026, Kennedy was asked whether he saw a path to run for president again as a Republican. He replied, “No, I’m not going to run,” according to KFF Health News reporting published May 15 and carried by CBS News. That is Kennedy’s own later statement, separate from Hines’s earlier prediction.

Why Hines’s interview also focused on campaign scrutiny
Hines described the attention and criticism that can come with a presidential campaign announcement. Her comments help explain why the prospect mattered to her personally, but they do not establish Kennedy’s plans beyond her own expectation at the time.
