Maya Hawke’s “Thérèse” video is a 2022 short film directed by Brady Corbet: a woodland gathering turns into a police raid, and Hawke’s character sings while handcuffed. Hawke said she wanted the song and video to explore loneliness, growing up, and pressure to conform, alongside questions about how women are viewed.
What happens in Maya Hawke’s “Thérèse” video?
The video follows a group of friends in the woods. Their gathering becomes an orgy before police arrive and the group scatters. Hawke’s character is left handcuffed, singing as the scene closes. The artist-posted video page credits Brady Corbet as director; Dazed described it as an “orgy-filled short film.”

What did Hawke say the song and film express?
In the Dazed interview, Hawke connected the work to loneliness, bad company, childhood freedom, puberty, and the pressure to fit in. She said Corbet had a vivid visual concept that aligned with what she wanted to express about the song: “Brady saw the video very clearly in his head, but I can’t imagine he could have guessed how well his idea fit with what I wanted to reveal and express about the song.”

Dazed reported that Hawke and Corbet also drew inspiration from Japanese photographer Kohei Yoshiyuki’s Kōen series, which depicts people engaged in sexual activity at night in Tokyo parks. This is one strand of the video’s inspiration, not a single definitive explanation of its meaning.
How does “Thérèse Dreaming” relate to the song?
NME reported that Hawke traced the title and central idea to Balthus’s painting Thérèse Dreaming, which she saw at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. In that account, she connected the song to being stuck in an identity shaped by somebody else, and to gender, misogyny, and the early sexualization of women. That describes Hawke’s reported interpretation; it should not be read as an endorsement of the painting’s depiction.

I think we are all tired of feeling like that.” Read the NME interview coverage for her account of the painting and the song’s themes.
