In an August 2023 interview with WIRED, Grimes described “living forever” as a creative project built around AI and artistic self-replication—not a medical longevity plan. She also spoke about wanting to die in space or move to Mars, while acknowledging that her children could change that wish, and recalled suggesting the joke behind Elon Musk’s challenge to Mark Zuckerberg.

Steven Levy’s WIRED interview with Grimes (Claire Boucher, also referred to as “c”) was published August 8, 2023, and ranged across AI, music, art, motherhood, and Elon Musk. It was edited for length and clarity. Its statements about her ideas and plans should be read as what she said at that time, not as confirmation that a project is still active or available.

What Grimes meant by “living forever”

Grimes connected the idea of lasting beyond her lifetime to AI-made music and the replication of her artistic identity. She said, “If anyone makes a good Grimes song, they can do it as me,” describing openness to fan-made songs that used her voice and identity. She also called the idea “A self-replicating pop star.”

In the interview, she described an in-house Grimes music generator as well as the broader possibility of other people making music through an AI version of her voice. Those were interview-era descriptions, not evidence of a currently available service. The conversation does not show that AI can preserve a person biologically or establish a medical route to immortality: Grimes’s “living forever” idea was artistic and technological, not a demonstrated longevity treatment.

Why she talked about dying in space or moving to Mars

Grimes described a personal wish to go far enough into space that returning would not be possible for her body. “I would like to go far enough out there to where my body could not handle coming back,” she told Levy. She also said, “If I died in space, I would be like, ‘You’ve lived a great life, you did all the things you wanted to do.’”

She qualified that aspiration by saying her children might need her. The interview presents the idea as a personal reflection, not a scheduled mission or verified plan to move to Mars. It supplies no independent evidence about the feasibility or timing of such a journey.

What she said about Musk’s Zuckerberg challenge

Discussing the proposed cage match between Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, Grimes said she had suggested, “why don’t you cut to the chase and get out a ruler.” She then claimed the joke behind Musk’s tweet challenge: “I’m going to take credit for that one.” Her account is an anecdote about the idea; it does not establish that she supplied the exact wording Musk posted.

The book behind her educational-project idea

Grimes named Neal Stephenson’s novel The Diamond Age as inspiration for a proposed educational project resembling a talking toy with a personality. The reference gives context to her interest in technology and learning, but the interview does not establish that the project was released or remains in development. The Diamond Age is a relevant book for readers interested in that reference; it is not the central subject of the interview.
