Spoilers for the manga’s final arc and chapter 166.
Oshi no Ko ends with Aqua dying while stopping Hikaru Kamiki. Ruby survives and continues pursuing her idol career, reaching the stage she dreamed of while still carrying grief. The ending resolves Aqua’s revenge, but it does not make Ruby’s loss disappear.
What happens in the Oshi no Ko ending?
In chapter 166, Aqua chooses to stop Hikaru Kamiki at the cost of his own life, according to ComicBook.com’s November 13, 2024 finale coverage. The climax makes the revenge plot inseparable from the question of what Aqua is willing to sacrifice to protect Ruby. That is a reading of the reported events, not a stated explanation from the creator.
Ruby survives. She grieves, but continues forward with support from friends and carries on as an idol. In the final chapter, she describes performing as joyful while acknowledging that the work demands lies and smiling through hardship.

What does the ending mean?
Ruby’s dream comes true, but at a cost
Ruby reaches the stage she wanted, yet her success does not restore her family or erase her grief. That contrast is why the finale can reasonably be called bittersweet: the career dream is fulfilled, while the personal loss remains. “Bittersweet” is an interpretation of the ending, not a definitive theme declared by the creators.
The public image and private pain remain side by side
Ruby’s comments about lying and smiling through hardship echo the tension between an idol’s public image and private feelings. Her final performance can be read as making her a source of light for others even as she continues to hurt. The chapter supports that interpretation, but does not establish it as the only correct meaning.

Revenge ends, but does not undo the damage
Aqua’s death stops Hikaru, but the resolution is not a simple victory: the people left behind must live with what the revenge cost. Readers may find the conclusion hopeful, tragic, or both. The story leaves that emotional judgment open.
Was the ending planned?
In a Shueisha Online interview published November 14, 2024, Aka Akasaka said the ending proceeded as he expected. He also described distinguishing story elements decided in advance from those left open, because writing could reveal interior qualities in characters that he wanted to respect. He said Aqua had become more sensitive and more guarded about showing his feelings as the story continued.

ORICON’s December 17, 2024 report says volume 16 includes chapters 153–166 and 24 pages of new content. It also reported that the manga had surpassed 20 million copies in circulation at that time; this is a dated figure, not a current circulation total.
The anime has not been shown to reach this ending by the cited official information. KADOKAWA’s Season 3 page lists an 11-episode 2026 production and gives a January 14, 2026 premiere in its trailer caption, but its synopsis covers events well before the manga finale. That page is not evidence that chapter 166 has been adapted.
