Spoilers for the Season 4 finale of Will Trent. Angie Polaski and Dr. Seth McDale’s new marriage ended in tragedy in the May 6, 2026 finale, “Be of Service.” Seth died after a car crash on the way to the hospital, while Angie and their baby survived. The show’s creators say the short marriage was planned in part to bring Angie and Will back into each other’s orbit—but they have not confirmed that the former couple will reunite romantically.
What happened to Angie and Seth?
Season 4 had begun building a future for Angie and Seth. ABC’s episode listing marks “You’re Not That Person Anymore,” dated February 11, 2026, as the point when their next chapter starts taking shape. That future ends in the finale: Angie goes into labor after a car crash, and Seth, gravely injured, gets her to the hospital before dying. Angie and the baby survive. Angie names her daughter Edie.
In the aftermath, Angie is devastated and recovering. Will takes leave from work to help care for Edie, and as Angie begins to recover, he and Angie settle into a family-like unit. That immediate bond is not the same thing as a resumed romance: the finale leaves them close and supportive, not dating.
Why did the show kill Seth?
The short-lived marriage was a deliberate story choice, not an unexpected turn the writers described as inevitable. In a May 5, 2026 TVLine interview, co-showrunners Liz Heldens, Karine Rosenthal, and Daniel Thomsen confirmed that they knew Seth and Angie’s happy ending would be short-lived when they married. Asked if they had already planned that outcome, they answered together, “Yeah.” Rosenthal said the writers felt awful watching the wedding play out, but the plan was in place.

Heldens gave the connective story purpose: “But yeah, we did have that on our mind to get Angie and Will back in each other’s orbit.” The death therefore serves two arcs at once. It ends Angie’s stable new relationship and creates grief, recovery, and a caregiving role for Will—bringing the former couple into closer contact under very different circumstances.
That is a consequential tradeoff rather than a simple romantic reset. Angie’s loss and her life as Edie’s mother become part of the story; Will’s decision to step away from work to help makes his support tangible. The creators described the choice as emotionally difficult, but their comments do not establish that every viewer will find the cost worthwhile.

Does the finale confirm Will and Angie will get back together?
No. Heldens called Angie and Will “the beating heart of the show” and “the relationship that everybody follows,” but she was careful to leave their future open. In the same interview, she said: “And so it just felt like we wanted to bring them back into each other’s orbit, and we’ll see when we get into Season 5 if they’re coming toward each other romantically or not. We made a point to have that not be what was happening.”
Rosenthal framed Will’s choice as a new point in his development: “Now, having another decision point and saying, ‘I’m going to put the job on hold to be here 100% for this person who needs me,’ we wanted to bring him to that new [place], and bring the two of them to a new place in their relationship.” That “new place” is closeness and commitment to helping Angie, not a promise of romance. The showrunners said they had not decided whether the relationship would turn romantic in Season 5.

What could Season 5 do with their relationship?
The creators’ comments leave room for more than one direction; neither has been announced. A non-romantic family bond could let Angie grieve and raise Edie with Will’s support without turning that support into courtship. A gradual return to romance is also possible, but it would need to account for Angie’s loss, her agency as a new parent, and the change in Will’s responsibilities. The finale’s deliberate lack of an immediate romantic turn gives the story space to make that distinction.
For now, the most precise reading is that Seth’s death ends the series’ new marriage and pushes Angie and Will into renewed closeness. Whether that becomes love again is a Season 5 question, not a Season 4 answer.

ABC describes the television series as based on Karin Slaughter’s Will Trent book series; that connection does not mean Seth’s television storyline is part of the novels.
