The Old Guard 2 continues Andy’s story with a strong premise, a returning ensemble and new threats—but it is built as a continuation, not a self-contained adventure. The key question is whether its character and action beats carry you through to the next chapter: Associated Press critic Lindsey Bahr argues the film cuts off mid-story, leaving its ending unresolved.
What is The Old Guard 2 about?
Set after the events of the 2020 film, this sequel picks up with the team’s circumstances changed. Andy has lost her immortality, Booker remains exiled, and Nile has joined the group. Quynh, newly escaped from the underwater prison where she was confined, is seeking revenge. Andy, Nile, Joe, Nicky and Copley enlist Tuah, whose knowledge may help explain the mystery of immortality.
That setup gives the sequel two connected threads: a personal reckoning with what immortality means when Andy is mortal, and a larger conflict involving Quynh and the team’s search for answers. It is a direct continuation of the first film’s altered status quo, so viewers who need a refresher may want to revisit the original before watching.
Does the sequel work as a movie on its own?
Its biggest risk is structural. The story advances the franchise’s ongoing conflict rather than closing it out, and the ending may feel less like a conclusion than a pause in the middle of a larger story. That can suit viewers who are eager to follow the characters into another installment; it is a drawback for anyone looking for a complete arc in one sitting.

In her July 2, 2025 review for the Associated Press, Lindsey Bahr gave the film two stars out of four and called it “half a movie.” She criticizes the abrupt cutoff and says it does not recapture the opening sequence’s energy, while singling out Matthias Schoenaerts for bringing pathos to his performance. Those are Bahr’s critical judgments, not objective measures of whether every viewer will find the film satisfying.
