Psycho Killer has a promising hook: Andrew Kevin Walker, the writer of Se7en, returns to serial-killer territory in a film about a highway patrol officer pursuing her husband’s masked murderer. But the grim opening does not, according to most of the critics considered here, develop into a distinctive thriller. The movie’s cross-country chase, thin character work and late payoff leave its most intriguing premise short of its promise.
What is Psycho Killer about?
Directed by Gavin Polone and written by Andrew Kevin Walker, Psycho Killer stars Georgina Campbell as Jane Archer, a Kansas highway patrol officer whose husband is killed by a masked serial murderer played by James Preston Rogers. Jane pursues the killer across the country and uncovers a larger agenda. The film also features Grace Dove, Logan Miller and Malcolm McDowell. Rotten Tomatoes’ film listing gives it a 91-minute runtime and an R rating for graphic nudity, drug use, language, strong bloody violence and strong sexual content. TheWrap identifies it as Polone’s directorial debut.
The premise puts two kinds of suspense in play: the procedural question of how Jane will track her target, and the horror question of what the killer intends. The key test is whether the pursuit develops the opening’s menace into something more than a conventional chase.
Does the opening live up to the Se7en connection?
The Walker credit creates an obvious expectation of an unsettling, carefully constructed crime thriller. The early roadside killing and the masked killer establish a grim atmosphere, and James Berardinelli of Reelviews is the most appreciative of the film’s first stretch: he sees a promising first act with a strong aesthetic. That praise is limited, however. In his assessment, the movie later grows more generic, sheds its edge and veers toward self-parody.

Benjamin Lee’s review for The Guardian is more dismissive of the film as a whole, calling it “too straightforward and dumb to work as a crime thriller yet too dull and scare-free to work as a horror.” William Bibbiani of TheWrap likewise describes an “aimless, boring” serial-killer road movie. Taken together, these responses suggest that the opening’s atmosphere is a setup the rest of the film struggles to sustain—not evidence that the finished movie delivers another Se7en.
Is it a better crime thriller or horror film?
The movie’s hybrid approach is part of its appeal, but also the main source of the critical reservations. Jane’s pursuit should supply forward motion; the killer’s violence and larger agenda should supply horror and unease. Lee argues that neither side becomes effective enough: the crime plot is too simplistic, while the horror lacks scares. Bibbiani similarly faults the film’s style and characterization, finding its road-movie structure aimless rather than propulsive.

There are isolated elements that work better for Lee: a kinetic hotel-room fight and a hammy appearance by Malcolm McDowell. They offer brief energy, not a broader reversal of his verdict. Rotten Tomatoes’ listing includes mixed audience snippets praising, among other things, jump scares, dark humor, gore and the unusual structure. Those comments show that some viewers respond to the film’s ingredients, but they are examples, not a representative audience survey or a consensus measure.
Do Jane, the killer and the ending make the chase worthwhile?
Jane gives the pursuit a personal stake, but the reviews consulted question whether the characterization makes that stake compelling. Bibbiani finds the characters and style unconvincing; Lee criticizes both the reveal and the finale. Bibbiani also argues that the film’s ideas about Satanism do not cohere into a meaningful point, calling the ending “absurd” and “cringy.” Reelviews reaches a related concern from a different direction: the later turns lose the tension and edge suggested by the opening.

These are critical judgments rather than a claim that every viewer will react the same way. The most useful expectation to carry in is that this is not widely praised as a tightly escalating mystery or a consistently frightening slasher. Its late revelations and tonal shifts are precisely where the cited reviews see the film falter.
What does the long development history tell us?
Lee reports that Walker wrote the screenplay in the mid-2000s and that earlier attempts to get the project made involved Fred Durst and Eli Roth before plans stalled. The film was eventually produced in 2023 and released theatrically in the United States in 2026. That lengthy path helps explain why the project carries an older, familiar serial-killer premise, but it does not establish that the released screenplay is identical to an early draft.

Producer Roy Lee also told Eric Eisenberg of CinemaBlend in an interview published February 26, 2026, that some particularly gory material was removed in an effort to balance pushing boundaries with reaching a mainstream audience. He said, “There were probably a few more scenes like that, that were pushing the envelope – which, in order to get like a mainstream audience, you can’t really go there.” His comments describe a production choice; they do not confirm that an unrated cut will be released.

Verdict: should you watch it?
If you are drawn by Walker’s Se7en credit, temper expectations: the critical case for Psycho Killer is that it opens with some promise but cannot maintain a distinctive identity as a crime thriller or horror film. Reelviews gives the opening more credit than The Guardian or TheWrap, yet also describes a decline into generic pursuit and self-parody. Viewers most interested in a grim premise, gore or a few offbeat moments may find things to enjoy; anyone looking for a consistently tense, sharply characterized slasher is more likely to share the critics’ disappointment.
