This is an argued ranking, not an official verdict: “greatest” here means a blend of songwriting and arrangement, performance, influence, live impact and lasting audience recognition. Chart positions and polls help show which songs endured, but commercial success is only one measure of musical achievement.

Queen—Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor—formed in 1970, according to Official Charts. The order below weighs each song’s distinct strengths rather than treating one chart or poll as a definitive answer.

10 greatest Queen songs, ranked

  1. “Bohemian Rhapsody”

Queen’s signature multi-section work makes a persuasive case for the top spot: it moves through ballad, operatic passage and hard-rock release without losing its identity. It was the band’s first UK number one and reached the Christmas number one position in both 1975 and 1991, according to Official Charts’ Queen history. The company also ranks it first on its UK bestselling-singles list. In a separate poll reported by QueenOnline, Planet Rock voters placed it first among rock songs. Those measures differ, but together they underline its extraordinary recognition.

  2. “Somebody to Love”

Mercury’s expressive lead vocal sits at the center of a remarkable arrangement built around layered voices. The song’s gospel-inflected scale makes it one of Queen’s strongest examples of how studio construction could feel emotionally immediate. It also appears among the top ten in Official Charts’ UK bestseller ranking.

  3. “We Are the Champions”

Few songs turn a simple, hard-won sentiment into such an effective communal performance. Its steady build and singalong refrain have made it an enduring anthem, often performed alongside “We Will Rock You.” Commercially, it ranks second on Official Charts’ list of Queen’s bestselling UK singles. That is a measure of UK sales, not a universal ranking of artistic merit.

  4. “Under Pressure”

Queen and David Bowie’s collaboration is defined by the tension and release between its instantly recognizable bass line, layered voices and dramatic vocal exchange. Official Charts describes it as arising from a jam session and credits Bowie and Queen jointly with writing and production. It ranks third on the company’s UK bestselling-singles list.

  5. “Don’t Stop Me Now”

A piano-led rush of momentum, the song gives Mercury’s vocal performance room to turn exuberance into the arrangement’s driving force. Its fourth-place position in Official Charts’ UK bestseller ranking reflects how strongly it has remained in the public ear.

  6. “Killer Queen”

This early breakthrough hit established Queen’s taste for precise, theatrical songwriting: nimble piano, finely placed guitar parts and a sharply drawn character all fit into a compact pop song. Official Charts identifies it as the band’s first UK top-five hit; it peaked at number two.

  7. “Another One Bites the Dust”

Its lean, groove-driven approach stands apart from Queen’s more overtly theatrical songs. The track shows the band making rhythmic restraint feel just as distinctive as its big vocal and guitar arrangements. It is included on the official Greatest Hits track list and appears among Queen’s placements in the Planet Rock poll report.

  8. “Radio Ga Ga”

Built around a propulsive electronic pulse, “Radio Ga Ga” becomes a live event through its audience-participation refrain. It ranks sixth on Official Charts’ UK bestseller list and appears in the reported Live Aid set list on the official Hollywood Records Queen page.

  9. “We Will Rock You”

The song’s famously economical stomp-and-clap arrangement is designed to turn an audience into part of the percussion. Its impact is inseparable from “We Are the Champions,” with which it is commonly paired. The chart histories are not interchangeable: the original 1977 release was the B-side to “We Are the Champions” and did not chart on its own; the Five and Queen version reached number one in 2000, according to Official Charts.

  10. “The Show Must Go On”

This late-period statement earns its place through its dramatic scale and determined vocal performance. Its inclusion is a judgment about the song’s emotional and musical force, rather than a claim that it matches the other entries’ chart evidence. It is among the songs listed in the official score collection described by Hollywood Records.

What the UK bestseller ranking tells you—and what it doesn’t

Official Charts’ list is useful context, but it ranks commercial performance in the UK rather than measuring songwriting, influence or live impact. In its historical article snapshot, the company reported 2.6 million pure sales for “Bohemian Rhapsody” and 962,000 sales for “We Are the Champions.” These are not current totals. The list puts “Bohemian Rhapsody” first, “We Are the Champions” second, “Under Pressure” third, “Don’t Stop Me Now” fourth and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” fifth.

Queen’s official ANZ store reported in July 2022 that Greatest Hits had reached seven million UK chart sales, combining physical sales, downloads and streams, and accumulated 1.26 billion UK streams. It reported 240 million UK streams for “Bohemian Rhapsody” as of that same date. These dated figures describe UK performance, not global totals or current counts. The compilation’s track list includes several songs in this ranking, including “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Killer Queen,” “Don’t Stop Me Now,” “Somebody to Love,” “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions.”

Why rankings of Queen songs differ

A sales chart, a listener poll and a craft-focused ranking answer different questions. UK sales establish commercial reach in one market; Planet Rock’s poll records the votes of that poll’s participants; judgments about arrangement, vocal performance and cultural memory require other criteria. Rolling Stone Australia’s 2021 all-time songs list, for example, is an editorial reference rather than a dedicated ranking of Queen’s catalogue.

For a listening companion, Queen’s official ANZ store lists Greatest Hits on vinyl and CD. For readers interested in playing the songs, Hollywood Records describes Queen: The Platinum Collection Complete Scores Collector’s Edition as a hardcover collection with full-band transcriptions for nearly 50 classics. The availability of any particular edition can vary by retailer.
