King Kong’s climb up the Empire State Building is the most indelible primate image in this ranking, but the best-known movie “monkeys” include orangutans, chimpanzees, gorillas, baboons, and lemurs too. Here are 15 memorable screen appearances, ranked by cultural recognition, screen presence, memorability, and contribution to the story—not by a claim that one species or character is objectively best.
How this ranking treats “monkeys”
In everyday movie talk, “monkey” is often used loosely for a range of primates. Scientifically, apes such as orangutans, gorillas, and chimpanzees are not monkeys, and lemurs are a separate group. This list keeps the familiar phrase in view while identifying animals and characters more precisely wherever the film references support it. It also includes fictional intelligent apes and an early-hominin sequence because their place in movie history fits the subject.
The ranking weighs recognition, how strongly a character or sequence registers on screen, and what it contributes to the film. Lists from publications such as The Guardian, Slant, and Fandango offer useful critical perspectives, but they are editorial judgments, not a universal scoreboard.
The 15 best movie monkeys and other primates
1. King Kong — King Kong (1933)
Kong earns the top spot for combining spectacle with pathos. His image atop the Empire State Building has endured as one of cinema’s defining images, as The Guardian has noted. Fandango also points to the film’s emotional impact and technical significance. Kong is a giant fictional ape, not a monkey in the zoological sense—but few screen primates have left a larger mark.

2. Clyde — Every Which Way But Loose (1978)
Clint Eastwood’s comic companion is memorable because he is more than a novelty: Clyde is part of the film’s buddy-comedy dynamic. One persistent misconception deserves clearing up: Clyde is an orangutan, not a monkey. Both The Guardian and Fandango discuss his role, with Fandango explicitly identifying his species.
3. Cheeta (also spelled Cheetah) — the Tarzan films
Tarzan’s animal companion is a familiar fixture of the film series, helping with rescues and providing support around the hero. Film references describe Cheeta or Cheetah as a chimpanzee. The spelling varies across sources and films, so this entry uses both common forms rather than pretending there is one consistent spelling for every appearance.
4. Curious George — Curious George (2006)
The animated feature brings the inquisitive book character to the screen, carrying his curiosity and gentle comic appeal into a different medium. Slant discusses the film’s connection to the books, while the University of Wisconsin–Madison film index lists the movie. George’s appeal comes from the simple engine of his stories: a small discovery can set off a much bigger adventure.

5. King Louie — The Jungle Book (1967)
King Louie is a standout among the film’s animated animal characters, in large part because his musical scene gives him such a distinct personality and presence. The Guardian highlights the character and his song. Louie is an orangutan in the 1967 film, not a monkey, but his performance has made him one of Disney’s most recognizable primates.
6. Cornelius — Planet of the Apes (1968)
Cornelius represents the dramatic potential of a fictional ape character: he belongs to a society with its own assumptions, hierarchies, and conflicts, rather than serving only as a gag or companion. He appears in Slant’s selection of movie monkeys. The character is a chimpanzee in the film’s ape society, making him another familiar “monkey” who is, more precisely, an ape.
7. The capuchin — The Hangover Part II (2011)
The capuchin in this comedy supplies both comic business and a role in the plot, according to Slant. That combination helps the character stand out: the animal is not simply an animal-shaped punchline but part of the group’s increasingly chaotic predicament. This entry ranks below the more enduring figures, but the capuchin is a memorable presence in the film.

8. Chim-Chim — Speed Racer
Speed Racer’s monkey sidekick is a comic companion whose antics add a lighter counterpoint to the racing action. Fandango discusses Chim-Chim in that role. The character’s importance is not measured in plot complexity; it is the instantly readable pairing of a racing family and an expressive animal sidekick that makes him stick.
9. The capuchin — Raiders of the Lost Ark
A capuchin appears in the Cairo-set sequence and helps alert the Nazis to Marion’s location, as Fandango describes. The appearance is brief, but its story function gives it more consequence than a background animal. It is a useful reminder that a primate can matter to a film without becoming a central character.

The opening ape-like figures in Stanley Kubrick’s film are not a named monkey character. They are early hominins, and the sequence uses them to establish a foundational leap in the film’s ideas about human development and tools. Fandango discusses the sequence as a significant cinematic and conceptual moment. It belongs here because of its influence and ambition, even though it is a different kind of entry from the comic companions on this list.

11. Rafiki — The Lion King (1994)
Rafiki is a baboon and an advisor to Mufasa, according to the University of Wisconsin–Madison film index. His role gives the story a spiritual and ceremonial dimension, as well as a character who can guide events without being at the center of the royal family’s conflict. He is not a monkey, but he is one of the most recognizable primates in animated film.
12. The lemurs — Madagascar (2005)
The lemur colony in Madagascar brings a new social world—and a change of comic energy—to the film. The University of Wisconsin–Madison index describes the colony and lists the movie. Lemurs are not monkeys, so this is best understood as a group entry for a film whose primates are central to its appeal, not as a claim about their taxonomy.
13. Joe — Mighty Joe Young (1949 or 1998)
Joe is a gorilla, and both versions of Mighty Joe Young belong in a broad survey of memorable movie primates. The University of Wisconsin–Madison index summarizes the two films. Joe’s appeal rests on the contrast between his immense size and the emotional bond at the center of his story. This entry covers the character across the two films rather than ranking one version above the other.

14. Dunston — Dunston Checks In
Dunston is an orangutan, as the University of Wisconsin–Madison film index notes. The hotel comedy gives the animal a central role in the chaos, making him a natural fit for a ranking that includes both dramatic creatures and mischievous screen companions. Like Clyde, he is often swept into the informal “movie monkey” category despite being an ape.
15. The chimpanzees — Monkeys, Go Home!
Disney’s Monkeys, Go Home! is among the studio’s features identified by D23 as featuring monkeys, primarily chimpanzees. A collective entry is the careful choice here: the available film reference supports the film and its primate presence, but does not establish a particular character’s details. The title’s comic premise and its chimpanzee performers broaden this list beyond blockbuster icons and animated favorites.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What makes a movie primate memorable?
The strongest entries do more than appear on screen. Kong gives a film its central image; Clyde and Chim-Chim turn companionship into comedy; Cheeta and the Raiders capuchin help move action forward; Cornelius and the 2001 hominins connect primates to larger ideas about society and human origins. That range—from animal sidekick to dramatic symbol—is why “monkeys in movies” remains a useful pop-culture category, even when it is not a precise biological one.
