Why the purple group works
Each purple entry sounds like an animal name: BORE/boar, LINKS/lynx, PHISH/fish, and TOWED/toad. The group depends on pronunciation rather than spelling, so reading each word aloud makes the connection easier to spot.
The misleading online-activity connection
SPAM, TROLL, and PHISH can all suggest unwanted or suspicious online behavior, but they belong to three different groups here: email folders, fantasy creatures, and animal homophones. TechRadar contributor Marc McLaren recounted initially wanting to group SPAM, TROLL, and PHISH together; that is his reported solving experience, not a claim about how every player approaches the puzzle.

About the soda group
CRUSH, SPRITE, SQUIRT, and STARRY form the citrus-soda set. Familiarity with these brands can vary by region: TechRadar’s UK-based contributor said they did not know STARRY or SQUIRT as sodas, which reflects that writer’s experience rather than broad evidence about regional awareness.
