Marvel’s stated reason for turning to Doctor Doom is that the studio no longer saw Kang as a convincing Thanos-scale threat, while Doom had filled that kind of role in the comics for decades. That is Kevin Feige’s reported explanation for the creative choice—not proof that Doom was literally the only character Marvel could have picked.
Why Marvel says Doom was the right successor to Thanos
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige reportedly said the studio had begun to feel that Kang was “wasn’t big enough, wasn’t Thanos,” and that Doom could occupy the role because he had done so in the comics for decades. The comment, reported by ComicBookMovie.com, frames the change as a judgment about the scale and stature of the villain Marvel wanted at the center of its next Avengers story.
That distinction matters: “the only choice” describes Feige’s reported conviction about the studio’s direction, not an objective limit on the characters Marvel could use. The explanation is also attributed to Feige; it should not be mistaken for a complete account of every business or production factor behind the decision.
What Marvel has officially confirmed
At San Diego Comic-Con in 2024, Marvel announced that Robert Downey Jr. would return to the MCU as Doctor Doom and that Anthony and Joe Russo would direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Disney’s announcement establishes those casting and directing details. It does not provide a full plot synopsis or explain how Doom’s film backstory will work.

Downey’s casting naturally raises questions about a connection between Doom and Tony Stark, the character he played in earlier MCU films. The announcement does not establish that they are related in-universe, that Doom is a variant of Stark, or how the film will address the casting. Those possibilities remain unconfirmed.
Why the comics make Doom a plausible choice
Doom is not simply a powerful opponent for the Avengers. In Jonathan Hickman’s 2015 Secret Wars storyline, he becomes central to a reality-spanning crisis, making that run relevant background for Marvel’s choice of villain. That history helps explain Feige’s reference to Doom’s long-standing stature, but it does not confirm that the MCU films will adapt Hickman’s story closely. Comic-book precedent can illuminate why a character suits a saga; it cannot substitute for an unreleased film’s plot.

Feige’s reported comments specifically say Marvel’s doubts about Kang’s fit had begun before the events involving actor Jonathan Majors. On the available evidence, it would be too strong to say that Majors’s legal case alone caused Marvel to pivot. The title change and casting announcement show the direction Marvel announced; they do not, by themselves, establish every reason behind the decision.

What remains unknown about Doom in the MCU
- The films’ exact story and how Doom becomes the central threat have not been established by these announcements.
- Marvel has not confirmed Doom’s full film backstory or an in-universe connection to Tony Stark.
- The comics provide context for the choice, not confirmation that the films will reproduce a particular storyline.
- Feige’s reported “only one character” rationale is a creative assessment, not evidence that no other villain could have served as a saga antagonist.
