Tina Knowles Reveals Breast Cancer Diagnosis After Missed Mammogram

Tina Knowles said a later mammogram led to a Stage 1 breast cancer diagnosis after she mistakenly thought a pandemic-era appointment had been rescheduled. Here is her reported timeline and current U.S. screening guidance.

Tina Knowles said she was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer in July 2024 after a later mammogram, following an appointment canceled during the COVID-19 pandemic that she mistakenly thought she had rescheduled or completed. Her story is a reminder to check on a missed screening—not proof that an earlier mammogram would have changed her diagnosis. For average-risk women ages 40 to 74 in the United States, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends mammography every two years.

What Tina Knowles said happened

In interviews reported in 2025, Knowles described a pandemic-era mammogram appointment that was canceled and never properly followed up. She said she believed she had completed the screening later, then realized she had not. A subsequent mammogram led to her diagnosis.

Reports described the diagnosis as Stage 1 breast cancer and said imaging found two tumors in her left breast, one cancerous and one benign. Knowles underwent a lumpectomy in August 2024 and later experienced a serious infection after surgery. She said she was cancer-free in 2025; that is a time-specific account, not an update on her health today.

Knowles reflected that the cancer might have been discovered earlier if she had kept up with screening. That is her personal reflection, not evidence of what a mammogram on another date would have shown or whether it would have changed the course of her cancer. Her experience also cannot predict what screening will find for another person.

How often should average-risk women get mammograms?

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends screening mammography every two years for women ages 40 to 74 who are at average risk. Its recommendation, issued April 30, 2024, also covers some people with factors such as a family history of breast cancer or dense breasts. It does not apply to people with certain high-risk genetic markers or syndromes, a history of high-dose chest radiation at a young age, or a previous breast cancer or high-risk breast lesion. Read the USPSTF recommendation and its full scope.

For people age 75 or older, the USPSTF says evidence is insufficient to determine the balance of benefits and harms of screening. It also finds insufficient evidence to assess supplemental ultrasound or MRI after a negative mammogram for people with dense breasts. These are evidence gaps, not a reason to assume that one schedule suits everyone.

Routine screening guidance is different from evaluation of a symptom or follow-up after an abnormal result. If you have a breast symptom, a previous diagnosis, elevated risk, or questions about when you are due, ask a clinician what timing is appropriate for you.

If you missed or are unsure about a mammogram

A canceled appointment can be easy to lose track of. If you think you missed a screening, contact the imaging center or your clinician to confirm whether it was completed and, if not, arrange the next step. Tell the clinician about any personal or family history that could affect your risk. A missed appointment alone does not establish that cancer is present, and no one can know from the delay alone what an earlier screening might have found.

Knowles said she shared her experience to offer a lesson to other women. In the PEOPLE exclusive syndicated by AOL, she said, “It’s important not to slack on your mammograms.” The comment reflects her own experience; the screening interval for an individual should follow current guidance and personal medical advice.
