Some people topple in TikTok’s Center of Gravity Challenge because moving their arms changes their support and weight distribution. To stay upright, they must keep their center of mass positioned over the area still supported by their body. The challenge became a viral format in early 2021, but it does not prove that women always balance better than men: performance depends on individual body proportions and technique, and the challenge is not a controlled test of sex differences.
What is the Center of Gravity Challenge?
Participants start on their hands and knees, lower their forearms or elbows to the floor, then move their hands behind their backs and try to remain upright. That last movement changes how their body is supported while they are still trying to balance.
The format spread on TikTok in early 2021. Know Your Meme records videos appearing on February 12, 2021, but says the first uploader is unknown. The trend archive relates it to the 2019 Chair Challenge, a separate balance trend; the two should not be confused. Know Your Meme’s challenge history documents the trend. Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute’s 2024 explainer describes the sequence from hands and knees to elbows on the floor, followed by moving the arms behind the back. Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute explains the movement.
Why does moving the arms make someone fall?
Balance depends on the relationship between a person’s center of mass—the point at which their weight can be treated as concentrated—and their base of support, the area beneath the parts of the body touching the ground. In practical terms, a person is more likely to stay upright when gravity’s downward pull through the center of mass falls within that supported area.

When someone shifts from hands and knees onto their elbows and then moves their hands behind them, the arrangement of support and weight changes. If the person cannot adjust their posture to keep their center of mass over the remaining support, they tip forward or lose balance. The motion is not simply a contest of strength: where the weight sits as the support changes matters.
NASA’s Find the Center of Gravity Activity Guide introduces the same idea through simple experiments: balance an object to find its balance point, or suspend it beside a weighted string to trace a vertical line through its center of gravity.

Does the challenge prove women balance better than men?
No. The challenge’s viral outcomes are not a controlled comparison of representative groups, and the available reporting does not establish a verified success-rate statistic. A short social-media demonstration cannot show that all members of one sex balance better than all members of another, nor can it measure someone’s health, core strength, or general balance ability.
Dr. Craig Arnold, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, offered one possible explanation in an Inside Edition report: “Women, generally speaking, have a lower center of mass,” and “It’s closer to their knees. Whereas for men, generally it’s higher.” This is Arnold’s general explanation, not a finding from a controlled study of the TikTok challenge. Inside Edition’s report quotes Arnold.

Even if average body proportions differ, individuals vary, and the challenge also depends on positioning. Rajiv Ranganathan, an associate professor of kinesiology at Michigan State University, described successful attempts as involving a backward lean and weight on the heels when the elbows are placed on the floor. He said this tends to keep the center of gravity nearer the knees, making it easier to balance after the elbows are removed. VICE reported these comments, attributing them to Shape. VICE’s explanation includes Ranganathan’s technique observation.
That helps explain why people with similar body types may get different results: small changes in posture can affect whether their center of mass stays over their support. The sources discussed here offer explanations, not a controlled experiment measuring who succeeds more often.

How can you demonstrate center of gravity without the TikTok challenge?
A simple classroom activity can show the principle without asking anyone to attempt the viral movement. NASA’s guide uses ordinary materials, including string and paper clips, and offers two approaches:
- Balance an object: Place a simple shape on a finger or small fixed support and adjust it until it balances. This gives a hands-on way to locate its balance point.
- Use a weighted string: Suspend an irregular object beside a weighted string and mark the string’s vertical line. Repeat from a second suspension point; the lines help locate the object’s center of gravity.
The balance method is quick for shapes that can rest on a support. The hanging-string method is useful for irregular shapes that are harder to balance directly. NASA’s activity guide provides the instructions; a demonstration kit is not necessary.
