Under the Bridge is a heavy, often affecting dramatization of the 1997 killing of 14-year-old Reena Virk. Its strongest choice is to widen the frame beyond the crime and investigation, toward the troubled teenage world and community around her. But sensitive performances and serious intentions do not always add up to a gripping drama: its layered approach can also leave the story feeling diffuse.
What is Under the Bridge about?
Hulu describes the 2024 series as based on the true story of Reena Virk, who went to join friends at a party and never returned home. Riley Keough plays author Rebecca Godfrey, whose 2005 book supplied the source material; Lily Gladstone plays Cam, a local police officer character. The Television Academy describes the show as an eight-episode limited series. Hulu’s series listing and the Television Academy’s overview establish the basic premise and format.
This is a scripted dramatization, not a documentary reconstruction. The Los Angeles Times reports that the adaptation changes some names and invents others, partly in response to Canadian laws protecting the identities of young people accused or convicted of crimes. That distinction matters: characters and scenes on screen should not automatically be read as a factual record of real people or events. The Los Angeles Times review and reporting discusses those adaptations.
Why is it so depressing?
The bleakness comes from more than the knowledge that a child was killed. The series spends time with grief, peer violence, and the damage surrounding the case, asking how a community and its teenagers arrived at such a devastating outcome. It is less interested in making the crime a puzzle to solve than in showing the human cost left in its wake.

That seriousness is also a matter of restraint. The Guardian praises the series for not glorifying police work, centering perpetrators’ emotional lives, or relying on gratuitous violence, even while judging the drama bland. The Guardian’s review makes clear that a respectful approach does not necessarily make for a compelling watch. The series is rated TV-MA; expect material involving murder, violence, and grief. Hulu’s listing identifies its rating and premise.
Performances and the series’ wider focus
Keough and Gladstone give the series two of its clearest anchors. The Los Angeles Times singles out their performances against the show’s dark atmosphere, while RogerEbert.com argues that the series captures the tragedy in a way few comparable crime dramas have attempted. RogerEbert.com’s review and the Los Angeles Times review reflect the critical case for its emotional reach.

Its social frame is a meaningful part of that reach. Rather than treating the murder as an isolated mystery, the drama brings attention to race, class, xenophobia, poverty, and childhood trauma in the world around Virk. Creator Quinn Shephard described the series as “a more feminine and sensitive take on a crime story that reckons with the trauma of childhood,” in an interview reported by TV Insider. That ambition broadens the subject, though it does not guarantee that every strand feels equally vivid.
Does the drama work as a whole?
The reviews point to a real divide between purpose and momentum. RogerEbert.com finds unusual emotional force in the tragedy; The Guardian sees a respectful but bland drama; and the Los Angeles Times emphasizes the atmosphere and lead performances. The result is not an easy recommendation for anyone seeking a tightly paced crime mystery. The story’s center of gravity is its sorrow and surrounding social context, not the satisfaction of watching clues click into place.

The invented and altered elements create a related tension. They allow the series to dramatize a complicated case while protecting identities, but they also mean the show should be approached as an interpretation rather than a definitive account. Its fictional choices may help build a broader dramatic world; for viewers focused on factual reconstruction, they can be a distraction from the real case.

Choose Under the Bridge if you want a grave, character-led true-crime drama that takes the surrounding community and the trauma of childhood seriously.
