Rachel Zegler criticized the 1937 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs for centering a romance she saw as troubling and for its dated portrayal of women in power. She said she approached the heroine as someone who could become a leader. Those remarks became one strand of a much broader debate around Disney’s 2025 musical remake, which also involved racist backlash to Zegler’s casting, disability representation, and political reactions to the stars.
What did Rachel Zegler actually say about Snow White?
In a 2022 interview with Extra TV, Zegler was discussing the original 1937 animated film’s romance. As reported by Time, she called it “a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her. Weird! WEIRD!” The remark was about the story’s courtship, not a declaration that she rejected the entire film or its fans.
In other interviews, Time reports, Zegler called the original “dated” in its representation of women in power. She described her interpretation of the new Snow White as a young woman who would “be dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be.” The two points fit together: she wanted the character’s ambitions, not only her romance, to drive the story.
Later, in a 2025 Vogue Mexico feature, Zegler spoke about how strongly people felt about the film: “What an honor to be part of something that people feel so passionate about. We’re not always going to have the same feelings as everyone around us, and all we can do is give the best of ourselves.” Time reported that statement as a measured reflection on audience attachment, rather than a retraction of her earlier comments.

Why did those comments cause controversy?
The remarks were clipped and debated online. Some critics said Zegler sounded dismissive of a beloved classic; others objected to recasting the heroine around leadership, with some arguing that not every female character needs to be a “girl boss.” Those are interpretations of her comments, not evidence that she said she hated the original. The dispute was partly about whether a 1937 story should be updated and partly about how audiences read the tone of her criticism. Time’s account places the remarks in their interview context.
That debate also became entangled with reactions to the casting. Zegler, whose family is of Colombian descent, faced racist backlash after being cast as Snow White. Criticism of an adaptation or casting choice is not automatically racist, but the racist reaction was a distinct and documented part of the controversy, reported by The Guardian and Time.

What changed in Disney’s 2025 adaptation?
Disney describes its 2025 film as a live-action musical reimagining of the 1937 classic. Directed by Marc Webb and written by Erin Cressida Wilson, it stars Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Queen, with Andrew Burnap also in the cast. Disney lists its U.S. release date as March 21, 2025, its rating as PG, and its runtime as 1 hour 49 minutes.
The adaptation makes Snow White’s agency more explicit. In its review, the Associated Press describes her as an heir to a throne rather than a princess simply waiting for a prince. It says the traditional prince is replaced by Jonathan, a bandit played by Burnap, and characterizes the seven dwarfs as CGI. Those are the reviewer’s descriptions of the finished film; Disney’s official page identifies the movie as a musical reimagining. The AP lists the runtime as 109 minutes, one minute longer than Disney’s listing, so the runtime is best left to the studio’s official metadata.

Why were the seven dwarfs a separate flashpoint?
The debate combined questions about how the fairy tale represents people with dwarfism with concerns about employment for actors with dwarfism. Actor Peter Dinklage criticized the original story’s portrayal, and Disney said it was taking a different approach and had consulted members of the dwarfism community, according to Time. The finished film used CGI characters for the seven dwarfs.
Actor Dylan Postl raised a different concern: that replacing performers with CGI characters could reduce acting opportunities for little people. The AP review also criticized the effect of the CGI characters in the film. These are identifiable objections and judgments, not a single consensus among people with dwarfism. The disagreement is best understood as a conflict between representational concerns, adaptation choices, and the practical question of who gets cast.

How did politics enter the film’s publicity?
Zegler and Gadot drew separate political reactions that became part of the remake’s public conversation. Time reports that Zegler described herself as pro-Palestine and posted “always remember, free palestine” after a trailer in August 2024. Gadot has publicly expressed support for Israel. The Guardian also reports backlash to Zegler’s Instagram reaction to Donald Trump’s 2024 election victory, which included the phrase “never know peace,” and notes protests at Gadot’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony.
These episodes involved the actors’ public statements and the political climate around the film’s promotion. They do not, by themselves, establish what the movie says about those political issues or how every viewer responded to it.

How to separate the facts from the online shorthand
- Zegler’s remarks: Reported quotations about the original film’s romance and her leadership-focused interpretation of Snow White.
- Other people’s reactions: Critics’ claims that she was dismissive or that the new character was too focused on leadership; these are interpretations, not her own words.
- Production choices: Disney’s film is a musical reimagining; the AP describes Jonathan as a bandit and the dwarfs as CGI characters.
- Broader flashpoints: Racist backlash to casting, disability representation and acting opportunities, and political reactions to Zegler and Gadot. They are related through the film’s publicity but remain distinct controversies.
Time’s March 2025 overview and the Guardian’s release-day account describe multiple flashpoints rather than one all-encompassing dispute. Keeping those strands separate makes it easier to understand what Zegler said, what Disney changed, and what other people objected to without treating hostile online reactions as representative of all viewers.
