How Historians Define the Start of Capitalism

There is no uncontested start date for capitalism. The answer depends on whether historians emphasize trade, market-dependent property relations, class struggle, or industrialization.

There is no single agreed date for the start of capitalism. Historians reach different answers because they use different criteria: some look for a society organized around commercial exchange, while others ask when people’s livelihoods became dependent on markets and competition began to compel producers to improve. Those definitions point to different regions and periods—and none makes the Industrial Revolution automatically the starting point.

Why historians disagree about capitalism’s beginning

The question is not simply when people began trading, using money, or owning property. Those practices existed in societies historians would not necessarily describe as capitalist. The dispute is over when they formed a distinctive system: what relations organized production, how people secured their livelihoods, and what pressures shaped economic decisions.

Two influential approaches illustrate the difference. A commercialization account emphasizes the growth of trade, markets, towns, and long-distance exchange. A Brenner–Wood account asks whether social and property relations made people dependent on markets and exposed producers to competitive pressure. These approaches can recognize the same commercial growth but interpret its significance differently.

Trade and commerce: evidence, but not a verdict

The commercialization interpretation

In a commercialization model, expanding trade and markets help drive economic change. The growth of towns, exchange between countryside and town, and long-distance commerce may create conditions in which capitalist production can develop. The core question is whether these processes transform social relations or simply expand within an older system.

Why trade alone may not establish capitalism

In the Brenner–Wood approach, merchants can make profits and markets can flourish without the wider society becoming capitalist. Commercial exchange, by itself, does not prove that producers depend on markets to survive or that competition compels them to change how they produce. The influential Brenner debate, launched in Past and Present in 1976, challenged explanations that treated markets, rents, towns, or trade as an automatic engine of transition. Cambridge University Press’s account of the debate describes its focus on agrarian class structure and economic development in pre-industrial Europe.

Brenner and Wood: social relations and market dependence

Brenner’s emphasis on class relations

Robert Brenner gives causal weight to agrarian class relations and the struggles that shaped them. In this account, the transition did not follow automatically from more trade; it depended on historically specific relations among landowners, tenants, and producers. In the English countryside, changes in those relations are associated with increased food production and the release of labor for industrial employment. For a concise statement of Brenner’s intervention, see “The Origins of Capitalist Development” in New Left Review.

Wood’s test: dependence on the market

Ellen Meiksins Wood identifies capitalism with social-property relations in which people’s survival and social reproduction depend on the market. That dependence matters because it creates competitive imperatives: producers face pressure to improve production in order to remain viable. In her account, a society can be highly commercial without meeting this test. She distinguishes the commercially active Dutch Republic from early modern English agrarian capitalism, where market-dependent property relations were central. Wood develops this distinction in “The Question of Market Dependence,” published in the Journal of Agrarian Change in January 2002.

England and the Dutch Republic: competing routes into the story

England is central to accounts that locate the decisive shift in agrarian class and property relations. But it is not the only case under discussion. The Dutch Republic complicates a single-country narrative because its commercial and maritime development may be treated as either an important capitalist breakthrough or evidence that commerce alone does not define capitalism.

Sewell’s Dutch-breakthrough interpretation

In a 2024 article, historian William H. Sewell Jr. argues that seventeenth-century Dutch shipbuilding and maritime commerce compensated for limited local food production and constituted an earlier breakthrough to capitalism. He also argues that Dutch commercial, maritime, and financial initiatives influenced English industrialization in the eighteenth century. This is a recent interpretation, not a settled consensus.

Sewell frames the issue through Marx’s account of “primitive accumulation”: “Marx’s chapters on ‘primitive accumulation’ identify two putative sites of capitalism’s emergence: sixteenth-century expropriation of English peasants and Dutch-led commercial exploitation of the wider world.” This is Sewell’s description of the two sites he finds in Marx’s chapters, not a direct quotation from Marx. His argument appears in “On the Emergence of Capitalism: Marx, Brenner, and the Troublesome Case of the Dutch,” published in Critical Historical Studies, volume 11, number 1, on March 1, 2024.

Why the Dutch case does not settle the date

The Dutch example makes the definition question sharper rather than eliminating it. If expanding maritime commerce and financial activity are sufficient, a seventeenth-century Dutch breakthrough becomes plausible. If capitalism requires market-dependent property relations that impose competitive pressures on production, commercial success alone may not be enough. The answer depends on which features a historian treats as decisive.

Capitalism’s emergence is not the same as industrialization

The Industrial Revolution is a later threshold in some accounts, not the only plausible starting point. Historians who emphasize agrarian transformation or commercial and maritime change treat those developments as earlier conditions that could enable industrialization. Sewell’s interpretation connects Dutch initiatives to England’s eighteenth-century industrial transformation, while Brenner’s account links changes in the English countryside to greater food production and available industrial labor.

Keeping the terms distinct avoids a common confusion: commercial expansion is not necessarily capitalism, and capitalism’s emergence is not necessarily industrialization. A historian may identify an early modern transition in social relations and treat factory-based industrial change as a later phase or consequence.

There is no universal European template

The English and Dutch cases are influential, but they do not establish one uncontested model for every region. Scholarship has also tested Brenner and Wood’s arguments against other settings. A 2018 study of Catalonia, for example, argues that sociocultural struggles over production and labor help explain capitalist imperatives there, and that market-dependence criteria alone are insufficient. It is evidence of continuing regional debate, not proof of a single alternative origin date. See the Catalonia study in the Journal of Agrarian Change.

The interpretations discussed here center on selected European cases. They do not by themselves provide a comprehensive account of capitalism’s origins across the world, or establish that a European periodization applies everywhere.

How to read a proposed start date

When a historian gives a date or period, first identify what they count as capitalism. Ask whether the argument treats expanding commerce as decisive, or instead looks for market dependence, particular property relations, class conflict, or competitive pressure on production. Then check which region the claim concerns and whether the date refers to capitalism’s emergence, a commercial breakthrough, or industrialization. A date without those qualifications can make a contested interpretation sound like a settled fact.
