OBS Settings for a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Stream with an NVIDIA RTX GPU

Use NVENC, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and YouTube’s codec-specific 4K60 bitrate. Match SDR or HDR settings deliberately, preserve upload headroom, and test your actual scene before going live.

For a 4K 60fps YouTube Live stream, start with 3840×2160 at 60 fps, NVIDIA NVENC, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s current live-stream recommendation is 35 Mbps for AV1 or HEVC, or 50 Mbps for H.264. Choose a codec your installed OBS version offers, and use the bitrate only if your PC can render and encode the scene while your upload connection maintains sufficient headroom.

Recommended OBS settings for 4K60 YouTube Live

These are starting settings, not a guarantee that every RTX system can handle every game or scene at 4K60. YouTube’s live encoder guidance is the baseline; OBS options and suitable presets depend on the GPU generation and installed OBS version.

Setting Starting value Notes
Video resolution 3840Ă—2160 Use this only if OBS can render the actual scene reliably.
Frame rate 60 fps YouTube supports live streaming up to 60 fps.
Encoder NVIDIA NVENC Hardware encoding moves encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component; it does not eliminate GPU load.
Rate control CBR YouTube’s live settings specify constant bitrate.
Bitrate 35 Mbps for AV1 or HEVC; 50 Mbps for H.264 YouTube’s current 4K/2160p 60fps live recommendations, checked in 2026. These are codec-specific; do not substitute its separate video-upload bitrate chart.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Protocol RTMPS where available Use the secure ingest option provided by YouTube and OBS.

YouTube accepts H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live streaming. The best choice depends on what the installed OBS build exposes, as well as your intended stream format. For 4K60, YouTube’s cited recommendations are lower for AV1 and HEVC than for H.264.

Choose an encoder and quality preset in OBS

Select an available NVENC codec

In OBS, open Settings → Output and set Output Mode to Advanced if needed. Under the streaming output settings, select the NVIDIA NVENC encoder and codec available in your installation. An OBS community guide for OBS Studio 29.1 and later suggests NVENC AV1 for RTX 40 Series and NVENC HEVC otherwise. Treat that as version- and GPU-generation-sensitive guidance, not a YouTube requirement; later GPUs or OBS releases may expose different options.

Use a quality preset as a starting point, then validate

The same OBS community guide suggests P6: Slower (Better Quality), High Quality tuning, and two-pass quarter-resolution multipass. If these controls exist in your installed OBS build, they are reasonable starting points, not mandatory YouTube settings. OBS 31.0 documented additional NVENC controls, so labels and options can differ between versions.

OBS’s official guidance recommends current GPU drivers and explains that hardware encoding shifts work away from the CPU. However, rendering the game or scene still uses the GPU. If OBS reports rendering or encoding lag, reduce the scene or game’s graphics workload, limit the game’s frame rate, or use a less demanding preset. No single preset ensures that every RTX PC can render and encode every scene at 4K60.

Set SDR or HDR deliberately

SDR

For standard dynamic range, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 color and 8-bit depth. Its listed advanced video settings include square pixels, progressive scan, 2 B-frames, 1 reference frame, and CABAC. For stereo audio, its recommendation is AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Keep your OBS output consistent with the format you intend to send; these settings are not a reason to enable HDR.

HDR

HDR follows a separate path: YouTube recommends H.265/HEVC over RTMP(S) and 10-bit depth, and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Do not combine the SDR Rec. 709/8-bit setup indiscriminately with HDR output. Confirm that your OBS build, source content, and YouTube ingest settings support the HDR configuration before using it.

Calculate the upload capacity you need

Your connection must sustain the stream’s total outgoing bitrate. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and keeping about 20% headroom above the total bitrate, including both primary and backup streams if you send both. Download speed does not establish upload capacity.

Codec and YouTube 4K60 live bitrate Upload capacity with 20% headroom How to read the figure
AV1 or HEVC: 35 Mbps At least 42 Mbps Calculated as 35 Mbps × 1.2; an application of YouTube’s headroom recommendation, not a separately published threshold.
H.264: 50 Mbps At least 60 Mbps Calculated as 50 Mbps × 1.2; an application of YouTube’s headroom recommendation, not a separately published threshold.

Those figures assume the stream is the only significant outgoing traffic. Other people or devices using the same connection can consume the margin, so allow additional capacity where needed. Measure upload performance under conditions representative of the broadcast rather than relying on the connection’s advertised download speed.

Run a preflight before the broadcast

  1. Update and inspect: install current GPU drivers, open OBS’s streaming output settings, and confirm the NVENC codec and controls available in that OBS version.
  2. Match the format: set 3840Ă—2160 and 60 fps if your computer can render and encode the actual scene at that rate. Choose SDR or HDR settings as a complete, compatible path.
  3. Enter YouTube’s live baseline: use CBR, the codec-specific 4K60 bitrate, a 2-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS where available.
  4. Measure upload: test the upload connection and compare its sustained capacity with the total outgoing bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
  5. Test representative content: send a test with the kind of motion and audio expected in the real stream. A static desktop is not a useful stand-in for a fast-moving game or documentary footage with frequent cuts.
  6. Check YouTube before going live: preview the stream in Live Control Room and verify that the signal and audio are as expected.
  7. Monitor during the event: watch stream health and OBS performance. If the connection or PC cannot sustain the configuration, lower the bitrate or reduce rendering demands rather than continuing with unstable output.

Troubleshooting common 4K60 problems

Stream health reports dropped frames or an unstable connection

The upload link may not sustain the selected bitrate, or competing network use may have consumed headroom. Test upload capacity again under realistic conditions, account for any backup stream, and reduce bitrate if necessary. If you change codec, use the bitrate recommendation for that codec.

OBS reports rendering lag or encoding lag

NVENC does not make rendering free: a demanding game, scene, or GPU workload can interfere with producing frames for the stream. Limit the game’s frame rate, lower graphics load, simplify the scene, or choose a less demanding NVENC preset. Retest at the intended resolution and frame rate.

The encoder menu does not match a guide

Encoder names and controls vary with GPU generation and OBS version. The P6 and codec suggestions from the community guide are for OBS Studio 29.1 and later and may not describe a later GPU or build. Use the options actually shown in OBS and keep YouTube’s CBR, keyframe, and bitrate recommendations as the platform baseline.

HDR colors or format are wrong

Check that the stream is using a compatible HDR route: HEVC over RTMP(S) and 10-bit depth according to YouTube’s recommendation. AV1 is not supported for HDR on the cited YouTube guidance. Do not apply SDR settings as though they were interchangeable with HDR.

The stream looks poor despite meeting the bitrate target

Confirm that OBS is sending the intended resolution and frame rate, that the selected codec matches the bitrate you set, and that the stream is not suffering from rendering or encoding lag. Preview in Live Control Room and inspect stream health; a target bitrate cannot compensate for frames that the PC fails to render or encode reliably.

Copyright, reused material, and keeping a stream live

Technical settings do not grant permission to broadcast copyrighted material or establish eligibility for YouTube monetization. Before streaming footage, music, or documentary excerpts, make sure you have the necessary rights and review YouTube’s applicable policies on copyright and reused content. A stream that runs continuously can still be removed, claimed, restricted, or demonetized under platform rules.
