WWE’s Different Eras, Explained: A Timeline of the Golden Age to Today

WWE’s official history timeline and era poll divide the company’s past differently. Here’s how their labels, dates and defining moments fit together.

WWE has no single, universally fixed timeline of its eras. Its official history page divides the story into six periods, while a separate WWE poll uses labels such as Golden Age, Ruthless Aggression, PG, Reality and New Era. The timelines overlap and do not line up exactly, so the dates below are best read as WWE’s useful labels—not hard boundaries.

What are the different eras of WWE?

WWE’s official history timeline uses six sections from 1982 to the present. Its separate era poll breaks some of those same years into more, shorter periods. The table keeps those schemes distinct rather than merging them into a chronology WWE itself does not publish.

WWE label and source Approximate dates What defines the period
The ’80s Boom — WWE history timeline 1982–1985 A period WWE identifies as the ’80s Boom, followed in its timeline by the rise of WrestleMania.
Dawn of WrestleMania — WWE history timeline 1985–1990 WrestleMania becomes the organizing milestone in WWE’s account of this period.
Golden Age — WWE era poll ’80s to early ’90s WWE associates Hulk Hogan, Roddy Piper and Randy Savage with its Golden Era. The poll’s range overlaps the timeline’s first two sections.
New Generation — both WWE sources History timeline: 1990–1996; era poll: early to mid-’90s WWE’s performer examples include Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels and Diesel. The two sources use different date spans.
Attitude Era / Attitude — both WWE sources History timeline: 1996–2001; era poll: mid-’90s to early 2000s A more confrontational, irreverent presentation, associated with Steve Austin, The Rock, Mankind and D-Generation X.
Postwar Era — WWE history timeline 2001–2005 WWE’s label for the years after its timeline’s Attitude Era, as the competitive context changed.
Ruthless Aggression — WWE era poll 2002–2008 WWE connects the period to the aftermath of its WCW rivalry, a Raw/SmackDown roster split and new match concepts. The poll’s span overlaps the timeline’s Postwar and Modern eras.
Modern Era — WWE history timeline 2005–present The broad label used by WWE’s history page. It runs alongside shorter labels in the era poll.
PG — WWE era poll 2008–2013 A separate label in WWE’s poll; the history timeline does not divide the Modern Era this way.
Reality — WWE era poll 2014–2016 Another shorter label used by the poll, not by the six-part history timeline.
New Era — WWE era poll 2016–present The poll’s current-era label, which overlaps the timeline’s continuing Modern Era.

WWE describes its six-part history as a “definitive account of the most meaningful moments in WWE’s lore”; that is the company’s characterization of its own timeline. Its official history is available at WWE’s history timeline, and its alternative period labels appear in WWE’s era poll.

When did the Attitude Era start?

WWE’s history timeline dates the Attitude Era to 1996–2001, but its retrospective says the beginning is difficult to pinpoint. It identifies several possible signals rather than a single uncontested start date:

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • 1996: Steve Austin’s King of the Ring speech introduced the “Austin 3:16” catchphrase. WWE’s timeline calls the moment an unofficial kickoff. In the on-air speech, as reproduced by WWE, Austin said: “Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass!”
  • Early 1997: WWE points to a change in Bret Hart’s presentation as another possible marker.
  • D-Generation X: The group’s emergence is also cited as a sign that the period’s style was taking shape. WWE highlights its 1998 invasion of WCW’s Monday Nitro.

The era is remembered for a more confrontational and irreverent tone, but those markers make it more accurate to describe a transition than to assign one precise first day. In WWE’s retrospective, Austin later explained his speech this way: “It was what I was feeling and it was from my heart and from my guts and what was going on inside my brain.” See WWE’s Attitude Era retrospective and its historical timeline entry.

What came after the Attitude Era?

In WWE’s six-part history timeline, the Postwar Era follows the Attitude Era, covering 2001–2005. WWE’s separate poll calls a period beginning in 2002 the Ruthless Aggression Era and dates it through 2008. These descriptions overlap: they are different ways WWE has divided and named a changing period, not sequential, exclusive boxes.

What was the Ruthless Aggression Era?

WWE links Ruthless Aggression to the aftermath of the WCW rivalry and a new competitive landscape. The company also points to the Raw/SmackDown roster split, which gave its two main shows separate rosters, and to match concepts including Elimination Chamber and Money in the Bank. WWE’s examples of stars associated with the period include John Cena, Brock Lesnar, Randy Orton and Batista.

Those features help explain why WWE’s poll starts Ruthless Aggression in 2002, even as its history timeline places the broader Postwar Era in 2001. WWE’s overview is at Ruthless Aggression; its performer-focused account is at WWE’s Ruthless Aggression-era performer page.

Why do WWE’s era dates differ?

The official history page and era poll serve different purposes: one tells a six-part historical story, while the other offers a more granular set of labels. Their dates overlap, and the labels do not always match. For example, the history page calls 2005–present the Modern Era, while the poll divides later years into PG (2008–2013), Reality (2014–2016) and New Era (2016–present).

Wrestlers, presentation and storylines can also bridge the boundaries. The dates are therefore approximations tied to WWE’s own accounts, not a single master chronology with definitive start and end points.

How to compare the eras

Rather than treating an era name as a precise historical dividing line, compare what WWE’s labels emphasize:

  • Presentation: The Attitude Era is associated with a more confrontational, irreverent style; WWE’s other labels distinguish different stretches of its programming history.
  • Competition and business context: The Attitude period sits within the Monday Night Wars context; WWE links Ruthless Aggression to the aftermath of its WCW rivalry.
  • Roster and star-making: Familiar examples include Hogan, Piper and Savage for the Golden Era; Hart, Michaels and Diesel for the New Generation; Austin, The Rock and Mankind for Attitude; and Cena, Lesnar, Orton and Batista for Ruthless Aggression. These are representative names, not complete rosters.
  • Format and match concepts: WWE cites the Raw/SmackDown roster split and match concepts such as Elimination Chamber and Money in the Bank in its Ruthless Aggression account.

These comparisons describe how WWE frames its history; they do not establish an objective ranking of which era was best.
