Joey Molland, the Liverpool-born guitarist and singer best known for Badfinger, died on March 1, 2025, aged 77. He was the last surviving member of the band’s best-known lineup, and his career linked Badfinger’s Apple Records years with recordings by George Harrison and John Lennon, as well as decades of touring and solo work. Reports described a recent hospitalization, but no definitive cause of death was announced.

What was reported about Molland’s death

The Guardian gives Molland’s dates as June 21, 1947, and March 1, 2025. The Associated Press reported that further details were not immediately available. The Minnesota Star Tribune said Molland had been hospitalized since December with complications of diabetes, according to his son, while explicitly noting that no cause of death was given. A hospitalization and reported complications do not establish a confirmed cause of death.

Guitar World relayed a message from Molland’s official Facebook page saying he died at 11:39 p.m. CST, surrounded by his girlfriend, Mary, his two sons and other family members. The Star Tribune separately reported that family members were listening to his music. Those details were attributed to the page and to the newspaper’s reporting.

Who was Joey Molland?

Born and raised in Liverpool, Molland played in several groups before joining Badfinger. The Guardian traces his earlier career through the Masterminds, the Fruit Eating Bears, and Gary Walker and the Rain. Badfinger began as the Iveys and became one of the early acts signed to the Beatles’ Apple label.

Badfinger’s recordings and Beatles connections

Badfinger’s best-known period brought Molland into the orbit of the Beatles’ solo work. The Associated Press and the Guardian identify Badfinger members’ session contributions to George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass and John Lennon’s Imagine. The Guardian also names Ringo Starr’s “It Don’t Come Easy.” These are credits to Molland and/or Badfinger; they should not be read as a claim that Molland played on every track of those albums.

Badfinger also appeared at Harrison’s 1971 Concert for Bangladesh. Harrison produced “Day After Day,” from Badfinger’s Straight Up, and played slide guitar on the recording.

Touring and later career

After Badfinger’s commercial high point, Molland continued performing with later versions of the band and made solo records. The Associated Press reported that he toured until his health began to fail in 2024. The Star Tribune said his last performances were on the 2024 Happy Together Tour.

In a 2001 interview with the Associated Press, Molland described his approach to work simply: “I was raised to go to work — to get up in the morning and go to work.” Speaking to Guitar World in 2020, he reflected on what Badfinger had made possible: “Badfinger gave me the opportunity to do everything a musician could want. I got to make records. I heard my music on the radio, and I toured all over. I couldn’t believe the luck we were having. For a time, everything was great.”
