It is a deliberately brutal cliffhanger—and, now that the series has concluded, a low point whose dramatic force can be judged as part of a finished story rather than a promise still waiting to be kept.
What happens at the end of The Boys season 4?
Homelander emerges with political power, while the Boys are rounded up. The finale converts the season’s maneuvering into a stark reversal: the people trying to stop him lose control, and the heroes are left in custody. That is the essential answer to “what happened at the end of The Boys season 4?” without pretending the available reporting establishes every beat of the episode.
Showrunner Eric Kripke described the ending as the low point in a five-season, three-act story, with the heroes’ return reserved for the final movement. In retrospect, that framing makes the capture more than a last-minute shock: it is the nadir the concluding season had to answer. Whether the reversal lands emotionally is another question. Its immediate effect is dread; its function is also plainly to propel the story forward.
Does the finale earn Homelander’s victory?
Strategy, not just shock
The escalation has a basis in Sister Sage’s planning. The Los Angeles Times reported Kripke’s explanation that Sage had accounted for Homelander’s likely failure. That detail gives the outcome a strategic logic beyond a sudden display of villainous power, even as the finale compresses the consequences into a cliffhanger.

There is a useful crack in Homelander’s apparent triumph. Kripke said Homelander knows he did not earn his success. Outwardly, he has the leverage; inwardly, the victory does not resolve his insecurity. That tension keeps the power shift connected to character rather than reducing it to a political chess move.
A reversal with limited emotional closure
The Boys’ capture is consequential, but it does not offer the satisfaction of a completed struggle. As a season ending, that can feel like momentum rather than payoff: the episode creates a compelling predicament and leaves the decisive response for later. Seen as the penultimate season’s low point, the bleakness has a clear structural purpose. The trade-off is that the finale’s strongest emotional beat is also an invitation to wait for the next chapter.

Does the political satire deepen the drama?
The political allegory is explicit, not merely an audience’s projection. Kripke told the Los Angeles Times that the show made references to Donald Trump, including narcissism and egomania, and said the election-and-coup story happened to align with events in the real world. He described the season’s thematic territory this way: “I wouldn’t call it a reflection, but I would say this is our worst fear of a pushed version of society.”
Actor Antony Starr offered a distinct account of performance intent: “I’m not there to specifically make fun of anyone. I just want everything to come from something inside the character.” That distinction matters. The show can draw recognizable political parallels while Starr plays Homelander from within the character rather than as a direct replica of a real person.

For this review, the satire works best when it sharpens the drama of power and self-deception—especially the gap between Homelander’s public dominance and his knowledge that the win was engineered. Its risk is that the allegory can feel so legible that it crowds out subtler character work. The finale’s most interesting counterweight to its political broad strokes is precisely that private weakness: power has changed hands, but Homelander is not made secure by having it.
Why was the episode renamed and given a warning card?
The episode was originally titled “Assassination Run” and was released as “Season Four Finale.” The Washington Post reported that the title changed after the July 13, 2024 attempted assassination of Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania campaign rally, five days before the episode streamed. The paper also described the episode’s alternate-universe January 6-style event and a plot to kill the president-elect.

Sony Pictures Television told the Los Angeles Times that the episode had been filmed the prior year. A warning card was added saying that the episode contains fictional political violence, that similarities to recent events are coincidental and unintentional, and that the production companies oppose real-world violence. The distinction is important: the reported title and card changes followed the attempt, but the producers said the story was filmed beforehand and was not intended to echo that event.

Amazon’s official season-four guide says the season premiered with three episodes on June 13, 2024, followed by weekly releases; “Season Four Finale” arrived July 18, 2024. The fifth season was announced as the series’ final season in May 2024. Prime Video’s current listing shows all five seasons and dates the season-five finale, “Blood and Bone,” to May 20, 2026. That makes season four’s ending a retrospective setup within a completed series, not a cliffhanger still awaiting resolution.
