Thelma turns a phone scam into an unlikely action-comedy, with June Squibb’s 93-year-old heroine setting out to recover her money. Its biggest draw is Squibb: Associated Press critic Lindsey Bahr praises her comic timing, and the film’s playful action-movie framework gives the veteran actor a lively showcase.
What is Thelma about?
Written and directed by Josh Margolin, Thelma follows Thelma Post (Squibb), a grandmother who is tricked by a caller impersonating her grandson. After losing money in the scam, she decides to get it back, embarking on a city journey with her friend Ben (Richard Roundtree), who travels by motorized scooter. Fred Hechinger, Parker Posey, Clark Gregg and Malcolm McDowell are also in the principal cast.
The scam’s $10,000 loss is a fictional plot detail reported in Bahr’s Associated Press review, not a real-world measure of scam losses. Magnolia identifies the movie as Margolin’s feature directorial debut and says it was inspired by an experience involving his grandmother; its official film page also gives the cast and premise.
How does the comedy use its action-movie premise?
The joke is not simply that an older woman is placed in an action plot. Margolin borrows the shape of a recovery mission—a wrong to right, a destination to reach, obstacles along the way—and scales it to Thelma’s circumstances. The adventure feels rooted in everyday mobility and family life rather than in the spectacle of a conventional action blockbuster.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That contrast gives the premise its comic energy while keeping Thelma’s goal legible: she has been underestimated, but she is determined to act for herself. The 2024 Sundance Film Festival program describes the scam and her quest across the city; Bahr’s AP review notes the scooter journey from Los Angeles’s Westside to Van Nuys.
Why is June Squibb the film’s center of gravity?
Squibb plays Thelma as the protagonist of her own adventure, not as a punchline to be rescued from it. Bahr specifically praises Squibb’s comic timing and calls the film charming and funny. That positive assessment captures the movie’s clearest strength: the comedy has a distinctive lead performance to follow, while the action conceit gives Squibb room to drive the story.

Roundtree’s Ben provides a companion for the journey, and Bahr praises the rapport between the two actors. Their pairing helps the adventure stay human-scaled: the pleasure is in watching friends navigate a shared predicament, not in treating them as substitutes for younger action heroes.
Is Thelma a comedy or an action movie?
It is best approached as a character-led comedy that plays with action-movie rhythms, rather than as a conventional high-stakes action film. Viewers looking for an elaborate set-piece spectacle may find the premise more appealing than the scale; viewers who enjoy a warm comic performance and an offbeat spin on a familiar genre may be more at home.

The movie’s scam-and-recovery plot supplies momentum, but the family’s assumptions about what Thelma can manage give that journey its emotional point. In the Sundance program, Thelma’s quest is framed as a response to being duped; the film’s comedy also turns attention toward the people who may mistake age for incapacity.
