Wally Amos, the entrepreneur who founded Famous Amos cookies, died at his Honolulu home on August 13, 2024, at age 88. His legacy extends beyond the cookie brand: after losing the company and the right to use his name, he pursued other food ventures and devoted decades to literacy advocacy.

Who was Wally Amos?

Amos was born in Tallahassee, Florida, and moved to New York City at 12, where he lived with his aunt, Della Bryant. She taught him to make chocolate chip cookies, a family recipe that later helped inspire his business. After leaving high school, he served in the Air Force.

Following his military service, Amos worked at the William Morris Agency. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History identifies him as the agency’s first African American talent agent; he represented musical acts before turning to cookies. The Smithsonian’s Famous Amos Collection includes business records, packaging and marketing materials, correspondence, photographs, and literacy-related materials.

How did Famous Amos begin?

In March 1975, Amos opened his first cookie shop in Los Angeles. He sold bite-size chocolate chip cookies based on the recipe he had learned from his aunt, and built a public identity around the Famous Amos name. The shop and the brand made him a recognizable entrepreneur, but the business’s later ownership was separate from his continuing work and personal identity.

What happened to the Famous Amos company and name?

Amos faced financial difficulties and lost ownership of the company and the right to use his name commercially. The Smithsonian finding aid dates the sale of the company and transfer of the trademarked name to 1985. His son Shawn described the loss as a lasting professional and personal wound: “The remainder of his life and the remainder of his professional pursuits were attempts to get him to, you know, reclaim that space.”

Amos’s daughter Sarah said he did not want to remain only the face of a company. In an interview with the Associated Press in 2007, he put the idea more lightly: “Being famous is highly overrated anyway.” Famous Amos continued to use his name on products, but that does not mean current cookies reproduce the original handmade recipe; the AP reported that Amos himself said the modern cookies differed from his own.

What did Amos do after Famous Amos?

Later cookie and muffin ventures

Amos later operated Chip & Cookie in Hawaii and co-founded a muffin business that began as Uncle Noname and became Uncle Wally’s Muffin Company. The AP dates the original Uncle Noname business to 1992, while the Smithsonian finding aid gives 1994; the sources therefore do not establish a single founding year.

Literacy advocacy

Beginning in 1979, Amos made literacy work a major part of his life. He worked with Literacy Volunteers of America and libraries, and hosted the television series Learn to Read. In 1991, President George H.W. Bush presented him with the National Literacy Award. CBS News quoted Bush as saying: “Your greatest contribution to your country is not your signature straw hat in the Smithsonian, but the people you have inspired to learn to read.”
