First identify which “Astra” you mean: Astra for Fire TV is a Jellyfin player that displays subtitle tracks during playback, while Cesbo Astra manages broadcast streams and its published overview does not explain how to create or add timed subtitle cues. Neither source establishes an end-to-end workflow for carrying subtitles from a prerecorded video into a separate live broadcast. The steps below cover what the documentation does establish, and how to avoid assuming captions will pass through.
Identify the Astra workflow
“Subtitles in Astra” can mean selecting a subtitle track while watching a library video, or preparing captions for a prerecorded program that is being sent out as a live broadcast. Those are different jobs.
- Astra for Fire TV: a Jellyfin client. Its help covers selecting and rendering subtitle tracks during playback, not authoring captions for a live output. The guidance is for Astra version 1.4.0 and Vega OS 1.2 or later. Astra help.
- Cesbo Astra: broadcast stream-management software. Its stream overview describes configuring inputs and outputs and processing streams, including filtering subtitles out; it does not document creating timed subtitle cues. Cesbo Astra stream configuration.
If your goal is a live broadcast, confirm the actual encoder or streaming service, its accepted subtitle format, and whether the destination preserves a selectable caption track. The Astra product name alone is not enough to prescribe those settings.
If you mean Astra for Fire TV with Jellyfin
- Check the media in Jellyfin. Confirm that the source video has the subtitle track you want. Astra cannot select a track that is absent from the media or unavailable from the server.
- Check Astra’s subtitle setting. In Astra, open Settings > Playback and make sure Subtitle mode is not set to All subtitles off. You can also set a preferred subtitle language in Playback settings.
- Select a track in the player. Start the video and choose the desired subtitle track in the playback controls. Astra’s help says supported text tracks can be switched instantly; check the player’s Instant/Reloads marker because some choices may require the stream to reload.
- Account for unsupported formats. Astra’s help says it renders ordinary text subtitles itself, including SRT, WebVTT, and text subtitles stored in MP4 files. It does not render PGS, VOBSUB, or heavily styled ASS/SSA on the device. For those formats, the server must burn the subtitles into the video image, which rebuilds the stream.
Burn-in can make unsupported subtitles visible, but it is not the same as delivering a selectable caption track. Check the playback result after any server-side processing.

If you mean captions on a prerecorded video sent out as live
A caption file may travel as a selectable text track only if the relevant platform, encoder, output path, and audience player preserve that track. Burning captions into the picture puts the words in the video image, but viewers cannot switch them off or choose another language. These approaches also differ in whether styling and placement survive processing and whether a full video rebuild is required.
YouTube’s documented caption workflow applies captions to an uploaded video: in YouTube Studio, open Subtitles, choose the video, add a language, then use Add to upload a file, auto-sync a transcript, or type captions manually. A timed caption file contains caption text and display timestamps. That documentation does not establish that captions attached to the uploaded video will accompany the same media when it is separately routed through a live broadcast. Confirm these details before configuring the live path
- Which Astra product and version, if any, is in the output path?
- What container holds the video, and what caption format does the ingest accept?
- Must viewers be able to switch captions off or select another language, or is burned-in text acceptable?
- Will the encoder and destination preserve caption timing, styling, positioning, and language information?
- Does the chosen processing step require a full transcode or rebuild, and has synchronization been checked from beginning to end?
Do not treat the YouTube Studio upload-caption workflow as proof of live caption pass-through. Verify the exact ingest and output chain with a short test before scheduling the full program.
Allow time to prepare and transfer captions
Caption work needs lead time for cue creation, transfer, and internal preparation. In a submission to Australia’s communications regulator, the Australian Subscription Television and Radio Association (ASTRA) stated that caption creation generally takes approximately three times the program duration, with transfer and internal preparation potentially adding more time.
