Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirst find out where the picture turns black: in the OBS preview, in a local recording, or only on the remote stream. If the preview and recording are black, start with the scene, source, capture support, permissions, and Linux display session—not bitrate or stream keys. If the local recording looks right but the remote stream is black, check the output destination and ingest configuration.
Why is my OBS screen black? Locate the failure first
- Check the OBS preview. If the intended picture is already black there, the problem is before stream delivery: inspect the active scene, source, capture path, and display environment.
- Make a short local recording. If both the preview and recording are black, continue with scene and source troubleshooting. If the recording is correct but the remote platform is black, focus on the stream output and destination.
- Keep dropped frames separate from a black image. OBS associates dropped frames with connection instability or a bitrate that exceeds the available capacity; those symptoms do not, by themselves, explain a black source in the preview. See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guidance.
Write down the affected output, operating system, and source type before changing settings. “Display capture,” “window capture,” “browser source,” “media source,” and a camera device have different failure paths; a fix for one may not apply to another.
Why is OBS showing a black screen? Check the scene and source
Confirm the intended source is actually visible
- Open the scene that is currently live and confirm the intended source is present and enabled.
- Check the source’s visibility toggle and its position in the source stack. An opaque source above it can cover the picture.
- For a media or browser source, confirm that its file or page is available to the OBS process and that the source is configured in the active scene.
- If the picture is black only after switching scenes, inspect the new scene’s sources rather than changing stream bitrate.
Do not apply a Windows-only capture fix until you have confirmed the operating system and capture method. OBS’s source availability matrix lists Video Capture Device as unavailable on Linux; Linux video devices use Video Capture Device (V4L2) instead.
For a Linux camera or video device, check V4L2
Confirm that the intended device is available to the account running OBS, then review the V4L2 source’s selected device, input, video format, resolution, and frame rate. A device can exist on the server yet remain inaccessible to the OBS process because of permissions or device configuration. If your source is not a Linux video device, this V4L2-specific check does not apply.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the Linux display session and graphics environment
OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland as Linux/Unix requirements. Meeting those minimum requirements does not guarantee that a particular capture source or streaming workload will work. Consult OBS’s system requirements.
- Verify that the server has a usable X11 or Wayland session, and that the same user and process running OBS can access it.
- On a headless server, establish whether a display session is actually available to OBS. Do not assume that an otherwise running OBS process can capture a desktop that is not exposed in its session.
- Check what graphics device and drivers the guest operating system can see before choosing an encoder or moving to different hardware.
Hetzner describes Cloud servers as virtual machines; its Cloud documentation discusses shared and dedicated CPU classes, and its technical FAQ identifies KVM and virtio for virtualization and devices. Those facts do not establish which graphics adapter is exposed to an individual VM, or that a GPU is passed through to it. See Hetzner’s Cloud Servers FAQ, Cloud Servers overview, and Technical Details FAQ. The reviewed documentation does not provide a verified Hetzner Cloud virtual-display recipe; do not treat a dummy HDMI plug as a guaranteed fix for a Cloud VM.

Separate scene rendering from video encoding
OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes. If the preview is visible but OBS reports rendering or encoding overload, simplify the scene and, if needed, reduce output resolution or frame rate. This addresses performance pressure; it will not make an inaccessible or missing source appear. OBS explains these performance checks in its encoding performance troubleshooting guide.
Hardware encoding is a separate choice. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel QSV for supported hardware and driver configurations in its hardware encoding guide. Changing from software to hardware encoding can change where encoding work happens, but it cannot repair a black capture source. First establish that the preview renders and that the guest actually exposes compatible graphics hardware.

If local video works but the remote stream is black
- Check that OBS is sending the intended output to the expected service or server, rather than another output profile or destination.
- Verify the destination configuration and stream key, and confirm the receiving service is ingesting the active OBS output.
- Compare the remote result with the local recording. If the local recording has picture but the remote output does not, investigate the delivery path before changing capture-source settings.
- If the problem is dropped frames, check network stability and whether the configured bitrate is sustainable. OBS notes that dynamically changing bitrate may help manage congestion, but it does not resolve the underlying cause and can reduce quality. Follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps.
Hetzner lists Owncast as a ready-to-use live-streaming and chat server that accepts OBS Studio or another RTMP source. That makes it an output destination option; it will not fix imagery that is already black in the OBS preview.
Should you move from a Cloud VM to a GPU server?
Consider a different host only after identifying a graphics or rendering requirement the current VM cannot meet. Hetzner documents dedicated GPU servers separately from Cloud VMs. Its GPU-server configurations and availability can change; the offering page was last changed on 2026-09-01. Review Hetzner’s current GPU server configurations rather than assuming a specific model or availability.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Before moving, compare the actual need for a physical GPU, whether the current guest exposes a usable graphics and display environment, the operating system’s source compatibility, and whether software encoding needs more predictable CPU resources. Hetzner’s dedicated CPU class concerns CPU allocation; it does not by itself demonstrate a fix for black video. A new host also will not correct a hidden source, unsupported capture method, inaccessible Linux display session, or wrong stream destination.

| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Preview and local recording are black | Scene, source, permissions, capture support, or display session | Confirm source visibility and type; on Linux, verify the relevant source and accessible X11 or Wayland session. |
| Preview is correct, but local recording is black | Recording/output configuration or a mismatch in what is being recorded | Review the selected recording output and compare it with the active scene. |
| Local recording is correct, but remote stream is black | Stream destination, key, or ingest | Verify the active destination and receiving service’s ingest status. |
| Video appears but frames are dropped | Network stability or bitrate capacity | Check connection conditions and bitrate separately from the source path. |
| Preview is visible but output stutters or overloads | Scene rendering or encoding performance | Simplify the scene or reduce output resolution/frame rate; check supported encoder and driver requirements. |
