To check whether a Linux VPS is losing packets on its route to YouTube, test the exact ingest hostname and transport your active stream uses, while the problem is happening. For an RTMPS stream, a repeated TCP route report to port 443 is more relevant than a test to a guessed YouTube address. Treat loss shown at an intermediate hop as a clue—not proof that the live stream lost the same share of traffic.
What you need to establish
A VPS being in India does not, by itself, explain a stream problem. The relevant evidence is the route from that particular server to the active YouTube ingest endpoint, at the time of the symptom, together with the encoder’s network counters and YouTube’s stream-health information. There is no universal packet-loss threshold or India-wide figure that diagnoses a VPS stream.
Keep network delivery distinct from other problems. A stream can have rendering, encoding, input, or capacity issues even when route measurements look stable. A route probe measures its own diagnostic traffic; it is not a direct measurement of every packet in the live stream.
Find the endpoint and transport your stream actually uses

Open the active stream in YouTube Live Control Room and copy its configured ingest hostname. Do not substitute a hostname from an old setup or a guessed default.

Confirm whether the encoder is configured for RTMP or RTMPS and note the port. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and advises getting the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. Its guidance says the protocol and server should be
rtmps; for SSL errors, try specifying port 443, and for timeouts check the URL and whether the encoder supports RTMPS. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance. -
Keep the stream key private. Redact it from screenshots, copied URLs, and shared logs; a route test needs the hostname and port, not the key.

mtr -T -P 443 -rw -c 100 <ingest-hostname>
Replace <ingest-hostname> with the active hostname you copied from YouTube. The options request TCP probes (-T) to the target port (-P 443) and a wide report (-w) in report mode (-r) for 100 cycles (-c 100). The Ubuntu Bionic manual documents these options for mtr 0.92-1; option availability can vary, so check mtr --help or the installed mtr manual on your VPS.

Save the output with the time and timezone. Repeat the same test during an unaffected period and, if possible, while the symptom recurs. A single report cannot show whether a result is persistent or coincidental.
Read the results without mistaking probe loss for stream loss
Loss appears only at an intermediate hop
If a router reports loss but later hops and the destination respond without comparable loss, do not conclude that the live stream lost that percentage of packets. Some routers deprioritize diagnostic responses. The Ubuntu mtr manual specifically cautions that modern routers may give ICMP echo packets lower priority, making their reported reliability worse than the actual reliability of those routers. That caveat is a reason to interpret hop-by-hop results carefully, not to dismiss every report.

Loss continues to the destination
Persistent loss at the destination across repeated tests is stronger evidence of a route problem than loss isolated to one intermediate hop. It still does not prove that the live TCP stream had an identical loss rate. Check whether the reports align with stream symptoms and encoder evidence before drawing a conclusion.
Compare with what the stream reports
Record when the problem begins and ends, including the timezone. At matching times, preserve the encoder’s network-dropped counters or connection errors and the corresponding YouTube Live Control Room stream-health notices. Repeated destination degradation that coincides with rising network-dropped counters and YouTube warnings makes a network-path explanation more plausible. Stable route reports point you toward other possibilities, such as encoder settings, available capacity, CPU load, or the input source, rather than a provider change based on geography alone.
Check upload capacity separately from packet loss
A route report does not tell you whether the VPS can sustain the encoder’s configured bitrate. YouTube advises matching quality to the available connection, testing beforehand with representative motion and audio, and monitoring stream health. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube lists H.264 1080p30 at a recommended 10 Mbps and H.264 1080p60 at a recommended 12 Mbps; those figures apply to those specific combinations, not every stream. Compare the stream’s actual codec, resolution, and frame rate with the matching row in YouTube’s current guidance.

Assess sustained outbound capacity during the stream, not just a short speed-test peak.

Test with representative content and audio before relying on the stream, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health information while live.

Common diagnostic mistakes

Testing a guessed endpoint: A route to a different hostname or port says little about the path used by the stream. Copy the active endpoint and confirm the configured transport.

Treating one hop’s percentage as end-to-end loss: Intermediate routers may handle diagnostic probes differently from forwarded traffic. Follow the route through the destination and repeat the test.

Testing only after the fault: Without timestamps and an unaffected comparison, it is difficult to correlate route behavior with the stream. Retain time-stamped reports and matching encoder and YouTube evidence.

Calling a bitrate problem packet loss: Insufficient sustained upload capacity can disrupt delivery even if route reports do not show persistent destination loss. Compare the configured bitrate to the correct YouTube recommendation and the connection’s sustained capacity.

Sharing an unredacted stream key: A key is not needed for a route report. Remove it before sharing logs or configuration screenshots.
