It may be worth testing for one pre-encoded, low-bitrate YouTube loop, but it is not a guaranteed 24/7 solution: shared-core contention and the plan’s transfer allowance can matter as much as CPU. Choose Dedicated CPU if the stream needs sustained encoding or predictable compute, and calculate outbound data before choosing either.
Nanode is a Shared CPU plan
Akamai Cloud, which now serves the Linode-branded cloud product, lists the Nanode 1 GB at US$5 per month with 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, 25 GB storage, and 1 TB of transfer. Nanode is therefore one particular Shared CPU plan. Shared CPU plans in the catalog range from 1 to 32 vCPUs, 1 to 192 GB RAM, 25 to 3,840 GB storage, and 1 to 20 TB transfer; those ranges describe the catalog, not the Nanode specifically. Akamai Cloud Shared CPU plans
Akamai says short bursts to 100% CPU are fine, but sustained Shared CPU usage should average below 80%. Dedicated CPU provides competition-free cores and more predictable compute. This is a meaningful distinction for continuous workloads, but it does not establish that a particular loop will fail on a Nanode or succeed on a Dedicated CPU instance.
Which is the better fit for a loop stream?
| Decision | Nanode / Shared CPU | Dedicated CPU |
|---|---|---|
| CPU behavior | Shared cores; contention is possible. Akamai advises keeping sustained average use below 80%. | Dedicated cores intended for predictable compute without competition from other instances. |
| Likely workload fit | A reasonable trial for a pre-encoded file pushed without expensive transformations, if measured CPU use stays within guidance. | Safer when encoding or resizing runs continuously, or when predictable CPU performance matters. |
| Transfer | Nanode lists 1 TB; account transfer is pooled and overage may apply. | Varies by plan. Compare the selected plan’s transfer allowance with the actual stream bitrate. |
| Listed price reference | Nanode 1 GB: US$5/month, listed by Akamai in 2026. | Akamai’s pricing page displays a G8 2-vCPU Dedicated CPU plan at US$45/month; this is a reference point, not a recommended minimum. |
Repeatedly encoding or resizing video can use materially more CPU than sending a file that is already encoded. Akamai identifies media transcoding as a Dedicated CPU use case, but there is no published benchmark here for a simple relay versus a particular encoder configuration. Treat the Nanode as a test candidate, not as a performance guarantee. Akamai Cloud Dedicated CPU plans

Check transfer before you deploy
The stream’s bitrate determines how much outbound data it sends. As a rough decimal planning calculation, 1 Mbps sustained for 30 days is about 324 GB before protocol overhead. At 4 Mbps, a continuously pushed stream is roughly 1.30 TB per 30-day month before overhead—more than the Nanode’s listed 1 TB allowance unless pooled account transfer covers the difference. Actual allowance and billing depend on current account details.
Akamai’s pricing page lists egress overage at US$0.005 per GB, says transfer is pooled across instances, and says inbound traffic is free. Check your account and region for applicable billing details before relying on those figures. An older Linode Community post gives a different historical overage price; it should not be treated as current. Akamai Cloud pricing · Akamai transfer and account guidance

Set the stream bitrate and encoder correctly
YouTube’s guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). It recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Supported video codecs include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; supported audio codecs include AAC and MP3. Follow YouTube’s current table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube live encoder settings
For H.264, YouTube’s table recommends 4 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. Do not use one bitrate figure for every resolution or frame rate; consult the corresponding row in YouTube’s live encoder table. YouTube also recommends testing upload bitrate and testing before going live.

Deployment checklist: test the actual workload
- Confirm the content rights. Make sure you have the rights and permissions needed to stream every video and audio track in the loop. YouTube may review a live stream and surface review messages; using a loop does not remove copyright obligations.
- Choose a plan based on the workload. If the file is pre-encoded and will be sent without resizing or re-encoding, a Nanode can be a low-cost trial. If the server will encode continuously or needs consistent CPU, compare Dedicated CPU options.
- Configure the encoder. Use a supported codec and audio format, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS where your software supports it. Set a bitrate appropriate for the target resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s current guidance.
- Estimate monthly egress. Multiply the configured bitrate by expected online hours, convert bits to bytes, and allow for protocol overhead. Compare the result with the current pooled transfer allowance and check for possible overage.
- Run a representative test. Use the actual file and settings, with similar motion and audio to the intended stream. Observe sustained CPU, RAM, and outbound network use, and check YouTube’s stream health and review messages.
- Monitor and adjust. Alert on transfer use and process failure. If CPU remains under pressure, reduce or remove expensive transformations or move to a suitable Dedicated CPU plan. If transfer is the issue, lower the bitrate or select a plan/account arrangement with enough allowance.
Costs and policy considerations
The Nanode’s listed US$5 monthly price does not by itself establish the full cost of a 24/7 stream: outbound transfer can exceed the included allowance, and an encoding workload may require a larger or Dedicated CPU instance. Akamai’s current pricing page lists pooled transfer and an egress overage rate; confirm the applicable values in your account before committing. Dedicated CPU pricing varies by plan and generation.
Linode’s Acceptable Use Policy prohibits using a shared system in a way that unnecessarily interferes with its normal operation or consumes a disproportionate share of resources. It also describes restrictions Linode may apply to some live-event streaming. The policy does not establish that an ordinary, authorized YouTube loop is prohibited, but sustained resource use should be monitored and kept within provider guidance. Linode Acceptable Use Policy

For network path, choose a data center with viewer location in mind; a Linode staff response has recommended considering viewer geography, without promising a particular outcome. One community respondent reported measurements for a specific Ant Media setup—approximately 10 Mb/s for one 4K stream, 20 Mb/s for two, and 4.03 Mb/s for two re-rendered 480p streams. Those are individual historical setup measurements, not general bitrate requirements or an official benchmark. Linode Community
