Keep the MP4’s width and height unchanged, then reduce its video bitrate or re-encode it with a more efficient codec that your playback-to-YouTube chain supports. The file will usually be smaller, but the trade-off is potentially lower visual quality; unchanged resolution does not mean unchanged detail. Then test the encode and live stream separately: a smaller file alone does not ensure a continuous 24/7 broadcast.
What you can change without changing resolution
Resolution is the video’s pixel dimensions, such as 1920 × 1080. Bitrate is the amount of encoded data used over time. Lowering bitrate while preserving the same width and height can reduce file size, but it gives the encoder fewer bits to represent motion, fine detail, and gradients. Depending on the footage and settings, the result may show softness, blocking, banding, or other compression artifacts.
A more efficient codec may also produce a smaller file at a comparable quality, but changing codecs does not guarantee a smaller result. The encoder, settings, content, and compatibility of every stage—from playback software to YouTube ingest—all matter. Compare the output visually rather than assuming that a codec change or a particular bitrate will suit every documentary.
Estimate the new file size
Use the combined video and audio bitrate to estimate the encoded size:

Approximate bytes = (video bitrate + audio bitrate) × duration in seconds ÷ 8
Express both bitrates in bits per second. For example, a combined bitrate of 5,128,000 bits per second over one hour gives an estimate of about 2.31 billion bytes, before container overhead. This is a size estimate, not a prediction of visual quality. Actual size can vary, and the calculation should not be treated as a quality guarantee.

Choose settings that YouTube can ingest
YouTube’s official live encoder guidance, checked October 4, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and frame rates up to 60 fps. It lists constant-bitrate encoding and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current table for your account and region instead of applying one bitrate to every stream. The settings that shrink a stored file are not automatically the right settings for a live encoder. Confirm that your playback and streaming chain supports the chosen codec and that the outgoing stream conforms to YouTube’s current ingest requirements. YouTube also recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio in the same guidance.

Re-encode and check the MP4
- Record the source properties. Note the MP4’s width and height, frame rate, video and audio codecs, duration, and current bitrate. These give you a baseline for checking that the output retains the intended dimensions and playback characteristics.
- Keep the output dimensions fixed. Set the encoder’s output width and height to match the source. Reduce the video bitrate for a smaller-file comparison, or test a more efficient codec only if your playback-to-ingest chain supports it.
- Encode a representative section or comparison copy. Use footage with the sorts of scenes in the full recording: movement, fine detail, and gradients. A setting that looks acceptable in a static shot may fail on motion or subtle backgrounds.
- Compare picture and sound. Inspect the source and output side by side at the same display size. Look for compression artifacts and listen for audio problems. Confirm the output’s pixel dimensions and that it plays correctly before using it for a long stream.
- Check the live ingest configuration. For the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec, consult YouTube’s current table. Verify its supported codecs, bitrate guidance, constant-bitrate setting, transport, and keyframe interval. YouTube live encoder settings may show localized bitrate tables, so use the values applicable to your account and region.
Test the stream and the 24/7 setup
Before relying on an encode for a continuous broadcast, test the actual stream using representative audio and movement. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Review stream health and any error messages; unsupported codecs and bitrate mismatches are among the issues covered in YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance. Review YouTube’s live-streaming errors.
Check that the available upload capacity can handle the total outgoing bitrate, including audio and other traffic. YouTube’s guidance states: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” YouTube streaming tips.

A successful test stream still does not establish that a setup will run continuously. Separately verify that the playback software loops and restarts as intended, that the host stays powered, that storage is sufficient, and that the network and recovery process can handle interruptions. YouTube’s encoder guidance does not guarantee 24/7 playback or looping for any particular MP4.

- The file is not much smaller: Check that the output video bitrate actually changed and compare total video-plus-audio bitrate and duration. A codec change by itself does not guarantee a smaller file.
- The picture looks worse despite the same resolution: The pixel dimensions stayed fixed, but reducing bitrate can reduce visible quality. Compare motion, detail, and gradients, then adjust the encode and evaluate another output rather than judging by resolution alone.
- YouTube reports an ingest or stream error: Check the selected codec and bitrate against the current YouTube table, and verify the required encoding and keyframe settings. YouTube identifies unsupported codecs and bitrate mismatch as possible error causes. YouTube error guidance.
- The stream drops or buffers: Check whether total outgoing bitrate fits available upload bandwidth, including audio and other traffic. Then investigate the network and the playback or encoder host; a smaller stored file does not by itself resolve a live connection problem. YouTube streaming tips.
- The broadcast stops after a while: Check the loop or restart behavior, host power, storage, network resilience, and recovery handling independently. File compression alone does not provide continuity.
