You can run a continuous YouTube radio stream by sending a prepared audio-and-video feed from an encoder to YouTube Live Control Room, then keeping the feed monitored and planning regular restarts. Before you schedule music, clear the rights for both the sound recordings and the underlying musical and literary works in the territories and uses you intend to cover. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
Can you stream an Indian radio station on YouTube 24/7?
You can keep a live feed running continuously, but treat it as an operational service rather than a set-and-forget broadcast. An encoder sends your program to YouTube using the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. You need reliable upstream internet, a plan for monitoring and recovery, and a restart schedule that accounts for YouTube’s archive behavior.
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is not a promise that a longer continuous session will be saved as one archive. If you want replayable programs, plan tested handoffs or restarts and verify that each resulting broadcast appears as intended.
What you need before going live
Channel access
- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
- Time to activate live streaming before launch: YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- Access to YouTube Live Control Room and an encoder that can send your program feed.
Program feed
YouTube receives a video stream, even if the editorial format is radio. For a music-led station, prepare a video file or live program feed that pairs the audio with an appropriate visual, such as station artwork or a program graphic. If you plan hosts, interviews, or live announcements, add the microphone and audio equipment needed for those segments. A USB microphone is optional for presenter-led programming, not a requirement for an automated music-only schedule.

Encoder and connection
YouTube supports software and hardware encoders and describes the use of external audio equipment. Choose a workflow that can run for the length of your planned broadcast and that you can monitor. Wirecast is one example named in YouTube’s encoder guidance, not a recommendation or a statement about current pricing or availability.
Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it; YouTube describes RTMPS as an encrypted transport option. Make sure your internet connection has enough upload capacity for the whole feed. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend upload capacity 20% above the total stream bitrate and note that primary and backup streams also consume capacity. This is a recommended headroom figure, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
How to set up the YouTube stream
- Enable live streaming in advance. Verify the channel, check for live restrictions, and activate the live feature early enough to allow for YouTube’s stated first-time activation window of up to 24 hours.
- Create a broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Set up the stream and obtain the stream URL and stream key shown for that broadcast.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: enter it only in your encoder, do not publish it or share it in public messages, and replace it if it is exposed.
- Configure the encoder. Select the stream URL and key, then choose output settings that match your program and the current options shown by YouTube and your encoder. Confirm that audio is reaching the encoder and that the video feed is present; do not assume a setting tested on one computer or network will suit another.
- Preview before going live. Send a test feed, check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room, and confirm the audio level, picture, and program order. Test with the actual material and network conditions you expect to use.
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. Check both Live Control Room and the public watch page. Keep an eye on connection quality, audio, video, and whether the stream remains live.
YouTube’s encoder and streaming guidance is the place to check its current configuration controls and recommended settings. The exact bitrate and available output options depend on the feed and encoder, so avoid copying a preset without checking that it fits your actual stream.

How to keep the station running
Build a schedule with recovery in mind
Prepare the sequence of programs or tracks ahead of time and decide who will respond if the encoder, computer, or connection fails. For a locally run encoder, the computer and network must remain available throughout the broadcast. A restart plan should include who initiates the new stream, how listeners will be directed to it, and how you verify that the replacement broadcast is working.
Because YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, test the handoff and archive workflow before relying on it. Do not assume a session longer than 12 hours will become one complete saved video. If continuity and replay both matter, test your intended restart cadence and check the resulting archives on the channel.
Monitor the connection and program
- Leave the upload headroom recommended by YouTube rather than planning to use all available upstream capacity.
- Watch stream health and inspect the public playback, not just the encoder’s local preview.
- Test backup internet or other recovery arrangements under realistic conditions before depending on them.
- Check that the playlist or program has not reached its end, stalled, or fallen silent.
- Keep a current copy of the stream key secure and know how to replace it if it is exposed.
Can you play Bollywood or other commercial music?
Do not assume that owning a recording, subscribing to a music service, or obtaining one general radio license is enough to retransmit commercial songs continuously on YouTube. YouTube’s livestream terms say the content provider must have the rights needed for exploitation on Google services, including music licensing rights, and must meet applicable territorial licensing, registration, or notification requirements.

IPRS describes licensing categories for uses such as internet streaming and radio broadcast, and says its repertoire licensing applies to works it controls. A song involves rights in the sound recording as well as the underlying musical and literary works, which may require separate clearances. For each catalog and intended use, confirm directly with the relevant rights holders or organizations that you have permission covering the recordings and compositions, the territories, live transmission, any archive or replay, and the platform-specific conditions. Ask for written confirmation. Can a YouTube radio station make money?
YouTube lists ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships as possible live revenue features. Ads require channel monetization and monetization to be enabled for the stream; YouTube notes that ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. Do not budget around a particular revenue amount without channel-specific evidence.
