To send pre-recorded video to YouTube Live with GStreamer, decode each file, normalize its audio and video, encode a steady output stream, mux it as FLV, and send it to YouTube’s ingest URL with rtmpsink. A playlist needs more than a single GStreamer launch command: an application must manage file changes and keep timestamps and output format coherent. Start with one short clip, verify YouTube’s preview, then build and test playlist control.
How the GStreamer-to-YouTube pipeline works
The core path is: media source → demux and decode → convert and normalize → encode audio and video → mux as FLV → send to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS. GStreamer’s rtmpsink sends FLV content to a streaming server and is provided by the RTMP plugin in GStreamer Bad Plug-ins. The GStreamer documentation’s short ffenc_flv ! flvmux ! rtmpsink example illustrates the mux-and-sink relationship; it is not a complete YouTube-ready audio/video playlist pipeline. GStreamer rtmpsink documentation.
For one file, a conceptual pipeline uses uridecodebin or filesrc ! decodebin, separate video and audio conversion/encoding branches, flvmux to combine the encoded tracks, and rtmpsink to deliver the result. Exact encoder names and supported caps depend on the GStreamer plugins and hardware installed on your system. Treat this as an architecture, not a copy-and-run command.
Why a playlist is a separate engineering task
A video playlist is not merely a set of sequentially named files. GStreamer’s multifilesrc reads sequentially named files into buffers; its documentation does not establish that it schedules arbitrary videos, decodes heterogeneous media independently, or guarantees clean timestamps when switching files. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a playlist, use application-level control to select each URI, handle end-of-stream, open and decode the next item, normalize its audio and video, and manage timing. The robust design goal is one stable encoded and muxed output feeding one RTMP connection while the source media changes behind it. This is implementation guidance based on the documented component roles, not a tested turnkey pipeline. A higher-level GStreamer playback or URI API and application bus events can provide the basis for source control. Do not promise seamless transitions until you have tested timestamps, encoder behavior, audio gaps, and YouTube ingest on the target system.
Set up YouTube Live credentials
- Create or select a stream: Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the event or stream. Follow YouTube’s current encoder workflow and copy the server URL and stream key it provides. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Protect the stream key: YouTube treats the key like a password and stream address. Keep it out of logs, shell history, source control, and screenshots. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update your encoder. YouTube: Manage live stream settings.
- Use the supplied ingest endpoint: Configure the sink with the current URL and key from Live Control Room rather than an endpoint copied from an old tutorial. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP; use it when your installed GStreamer and librtmp stack support the endpoint configuration.
- Start sending, then inspect preview: For a scheduled stream, start the encoder, verify the preview and stream health in Live Control Room, then use YouTube’s Go live control as appropriate for the event workflow. Stop the encoder and end the event through the current Live Control Room controls.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. For recurring prerecorded broadcasts, check current Live Control Room lifecycle and archive behavior rather than assuming one connection can run indefinitely. YouTube’s encoder workflow.

Choose a compatible output profile
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant-bitrate encoding, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. H.264 video with AAC audio is a conservative compatibility starting point, provided your GStreamer build has the needed encoders. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Bitrate and keyframes
Bitrate recommendations depend on resolution, frame rate, and codec. For 1080p at 30 fps using H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. Use YouTube’s current table for other targets instead of extrapolating from that example. Leave upload bandwidth headroom, and monitor actual stream health: selecting a nominal bitrate does not guarantee a stable connection.

Normalize mixed playlist sources
Files in one playlist may have different resolutions, frame rates, codecs, channel layouts, and durations. Convert their decoded tracks to the output profile before encoding. Test boundaries between unlike files, not just playback within each file: mismatched timing or an encoder restart can cause a gap, frozen picture, missing audio, or ingest interruption.
Build and test in stages
- Check the installation: Confirm that the target system has suitable demuxers, decoders, converters, encoders,
flvmux, andrtmpsink. The RTMP sink is in Bad Plug-ins, so a minimal runtime installation may not include it. Use local GStreamer inspection tools to check element availability. - Prove one file first: Pick a short, rights-cleared clip. Decode it, normalize its tracks, encode for the selected YouTube profile, mux to FLV, and send it to a test or unlisted event. Confirm the Live Control Room preview and review the recorded result.
- Check picture, sound, and health: Verify resolution, motion, audio, stream health, and upload stability. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring audio/video quality before relying on a live broadcast.
- Add playlist control: Only after single-file ingest works, add URI selection and end-of-stream handling in an application. Test transitions among files with different codecs, resolutions, frame rates, audio layouts, and durations.
- Test recovery and scheduling: Verify how the application behaves if the network or ingest connection drops, and coordinate encoder start and stop with the current YouTube event controls.
gst-launch-1.0 is useful for basic pipeline experiments and debugging; GStreamer describes it as a basic tool and recommends the GStreamer API for applications. Playlist transitions, long-running control, and recovery are better handled in an application than by assuming a launch command is a production scheduler. GStreamer gst-launch-1.0 documentation.

Troubleshoot common failures
rtmpsinkis missing: Install or enable the GStreamer RTMP plugin from Bad Plug-ins, then check that the element is visible to the runtime you are using.- Caps negotiation or codec errors: YouTube’s accepted formats do not guarantee that your local build has matching encoders. Check installed elements and explicitly negotiate compatible audio and video caps.
- No preview or failed connection: Recheck the current server URL, key, protocol, network access, and Live Control Room stream-health messages. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
- Black picture, silence, or broken transitions: Test the video and audio branches separately. Inspect the muxed output and preview, normalize mixed source formats, and investigate timestamp continuity or encoder restarts at playlist boundaries.
- Unstable bitrate or dropped frames: Match the target to YouTube’s resolution-specific settings, leave network headroom, and monitor stream health during a test.
- A launch command works once but not as a scheduled channel: A command-line pipeline does not by itself provide playlist scheduling, robust source switching, or recovery. Use an application for those controls and test failure cases before a public event.
