What a useful outage alert checks
A reliable monitor distinguishes between the encoder’s condition and YouTube’s view of the incoming feed. FFmpeg can remain running while the feed has a configuration or ingestion problem; conversely, an encoder process can exit before YouTube’s status reflects the failure. Treat these as separate signals.
- Local check: Is FFmpeg running, and is it still emitting progress?
- YouTube check: Is YouTube receiving the stream, and does its health status report issues?
Neither layer alone confirms that every viewer can play the broadcast without buffering. YouTube documents video ingestion starvation as a possible health issue; audience playback monitoring would be an additional, separate check.
Emit progress from FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s -progress option emits program-friendly progress information to a URL. Its documentation shows standard output as a destination with -progress pipe:1. Progress is formatted as key=value lines, with each complete block ending in a progress line whose value is continue or end.

ffmpeg [your input and output options] -stats_period 0.5 -progress pipe:1This illustrates where the options go; retain the input and output arguments required by your own stream. FFmpeg documents 0.5 seconds as the default for -stats_period. That is an update-period default, not a recommended outage timeout.
What the watchdog should record
- Record the arrival time of each complete progress block, rather than treating any individual line as a complete update.
- Track whether the FFmpeg process is running, and record its exit time and status if it stops.
- Track stale progress separately from process exit: a process can still exist while useful progress updates have stopped.
Set a stale-progress interval for your installation. Account for the actual input and output behavior and the expected progress cadence; FFmpeg’s documentation does not prescribe a universal outage threshold.

Check YouTube’s receive-side status
For automated monitoring, YouTube’s Live Streaming API exposes liveStream.status.streamStatus and liveStream.status.healthStatus on the liveStream resource. The resource describes the feed sent to YouTube.
Interpret the status fields in context
activemeans YouTube is receiving data. It does not establish that every viewer’s playback is problem-free.- Other documented
streamStatusvalues includecreated,ready,inactive, anderror. Whether a state is a failure depends on the broadcast you expect to be running. - Documented health values include
good,ok,bad, andnoData.noDatameans YouTube’s live-streaming backend has no health-status information; it is not, by itself, proof of an outage. - The health object can include its last update time and configuration issues. A
goodhealth status means there are no configuration issues at warning severity or worse;okmeans there are no issues at error severity.
Use the API when you have implemented API access and polling. The appropriate authorization, project quota, polling cadence, and alert-delivery method depend on your implementation; no universal values are established here.

Include actionable details in alerts
Alert on FFmpeg exit, stale FFmpeg progress, or a YouTube state or health condition that is unexpected for the planned broadcast. Include the observation time, which check failed, and the latest YouTube issue reason or description when available. A generic “stream down” message forces the operator to repeat the diagnosis.
YouTube’s Live Control Room is the manual dashboard alternative: it shows stream health and specific error messages with timestamps. The YouTube Help page See your live stream’s metrics explains that operators can check stream health and analytics while streaming. The API issue reference includes examples such as no audio or video, an unsupported video codec, mismatched primary and backup stream settings, and video ingestion starvation.

Reduce noisy or misleading alerts
- Choose a confirmation window or deduplication policy if transient observations would otherwise generate repeated pages. This is an implementation choice, not a YouTube- or FFmpeg-prescribed threshold.
- Do not automatically restart FFmpeg solely because one API observation is
noData. Check again and consider the broadcast context before acting. - Do not restart an encoder simply because it is alive or solely because YouTube reports a problem. First compare the local and receive-side signals and inspect the reported issue.
Choose where the monitor runs
A monitor running on the encoder host can inspect FFmpeg directly, but it shares that host’s failure domain: a host or power failure can take out both the stream and its local alerting. A separately hosted monitor can remain independent of that particular failure, but adds hosting and operational complexity. These are design trade-offs, not guarantees that one arrangement will catch every outage.
A local watchdog can track process state and progress; YouTube’s dashboard or API supplies the receive-side view. API polling makes automation possible, while Live Control Room supports operator review. Choose polling and alert latency to suit the installation rather than assuming a universal cadence.

Test the complete alert path
- Start the stream with the normal FFmpeg command and confirm the watchdog receives complete progress blocks.
- Confirm the watchdog records FFmpeg’s running state and can identify an exit separately from stale progress.
- Check YouTube’s receive-side status and health during the broadcast, using the API or Live Control Room.
- Verify that a test alert reaches the intended destination and contains a timestamp and the failed check. Where available, verify that it preserves YouTube’s issue details.
- Test with audio and movement similar to the actual event, and monitor YouTube’s health messages during the test. YouTube recommends testing under conditions similar to the event.
