Check OBS’s encoded output and YouTube’s received-stream information first. YouTube supports live ingest at up to 4K/2160p and 60 fps; seeing 1080p in playback may reflect YouTube’s transcoding or the viewer’s selected quality, rather than a 1080p-only input.
Why the OBS number may not match YouTube
OBS can show the resolution of its canvas or preview, or the resolution configured for output. Those values are not interchangeable. If the output is scaled to 1920Ă—1080, for example, a 3840Ă—2160 canvas can still produce a 1080p stream. The relevant value is the resolution and frame rate of the encoded stream sent through the active streaming output.
YouTube detects the encoder’s incoming resolution and frame rate by default. It then transcodes live input into multiple output formats for viewers. A viewer seeing or selecting 1080p does not by itself establish that YouTube received only 1080p. Check the incoming-stream information in YouTube Live Control Room as well as the available playback quality options. YouTube’s live encoder settings and the OBS Project explanation of transcoding describe these separate stages.
Diagnose the stream from OBS to playback

Check OBS’s canvas, scaled output, and frame rate
In OBS, open Settings → Video. Inspect Base (Canvas) Resolution, Output (Scaled) Resolution, and the configured frame rate. If the canvas is 3840×2160 but the scaled output is 1920×1080, the stream is configured to leave OBS at 1080p. Menu labels can vary by OBS version.

Check the active streaming encoder
Inspect the encoder selected for the active streaming output and its resolution, frame rate, and codec settings. A 4K canvas or preview is not sufficient evidence that the encoder is sending 4K. Make sure the output settings match the resolution and codec you intend YouTube to receive.

Confirm what YouTube received
In YouTube Live Control Room, check the received stream’s resolution and frame rate, along with stream health. If you use a custom stream key with manual stream-resolution settings, verify that the selected mode is not limiting the intended input. YouTube’s documented default is to detect the encoder settings; a manual key configuration may behave differently.

Match bitrate and keyframe settings to the codec
For its documented RTMP/RTMPS setup, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, recommends CBR, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds). Its current live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, recommends 35 Mbps for 4K/2160p at 60 fps with H.264, and gives AV1/H.265 a 10–40 Mbps range. These figures are live-ingestion recommendations, not upload-video recommendations. Use the row for the codec actually being sent, rather than applying the H.264 figure to a different codec.

Test the upload connection under realistic conditions
Test with representative motion and audio, check available outbound upload bandwidth, leave headroom, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health information. A connection problem can destabilize an otherwise correctly configured stream, but changing to Ethernet does not change OBS’s output-resolution setting. Resolve a scaling or encoder mismatch in OBS; investigate the network if stream health or upload capacity points to instability.

Distinguish ingest from viewer quality
After confirming the received resolution in Live Control Room, check the playback quality options separately. YouTube transcodes live streams into different viewer formats and feeds; the OBS Project also explains that these can differ in resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. A 1080p playback option alone does not prove that the incoming stream was limited to 1080p.
Choose between 4K60 and a lower output deliberately
Keep 4K60 when the source detail matters, the encoder can handle it, and the connection can sustain the codec’s recommended bitrate with headroom. A lower resolution or frame rate can be the practical choice if your encoder or upload capacity cannot reliably deliver the intended stream. Compare the actual resolution and frame rate, codec-specific bitrate guidance, stable outbound upload capacity, encoder capability, and latency needs before changing settings.

YouTube states that 4K/2160p streams use normal latency and do not offer its low-latency improvement option. If latency is important, account for that trade-off when deciding whether to stream at 4K.

- OBS preview is 4K, but Live Control Room reports 1080p: Compare the canvas with Output (Scaled) Resolution and the active encoder’s output. Correct any 1080p scaling or encoder limitation.
- OBS is configured for 4K, but YouTube receives a lower resolution: Check the custom stream key’s manual resolution mode and confirm the active output is using the intended key and encoder settings.
- YouTube receives 4K, but playback offers or selects 1080p: Treat the received-stream details and viewer playback as separate checks. YouTube creates multiple output formats; inspect the available quality options rather than inferring ingest resolution from one playback selection.
- The stream is unstable at the intended settings: Check stream health and outbound upload capacity, test with representative content, and leave bandwidth headroom. Review codec and bitrate settings against YouTube’s live recommendations.
When hardware is—and is not—the answer
There is no universal hardware fix for this symptom. A capture card may be relevant if the 4K source is an external HDMI device. Network hardware may be relevant if a separate diagnosis shows upload reliability is the problem. Neither addresses an OBS output-scaling setting or a manual stream-key limit, so check the signal path before buying equipment.
