Jorge González, the Argentine basketball player who became WCW’s El Gigante and WWE’s Giant Gonzales, died in Argentina in September 2010 at age 44. He had faced serious health problems; Argentine basketball authorities linked his final illness to diabetes, while WWE described complications related to his size. His best-known WWE chapter was a 1993 rivalry with The Undertaker, but his story began on the basketball court.
From Argentine basketball to the NBA Draft
Before professional wrestling, González played basketball in Argentina for Sport Club Cañadense and Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, and represented the country’s national team. FIBA reported that the Atlanta Hawks selected him 54th overall in the 1988 NBA Draft. He never played an NBA game, according to FIBA; being drafted and appearing in an NBA game are different milestones.
Sources also differ in how they describe his extraordinary height. FIBA gave his height as 2.30 metres (7 feet 5 inches), while Argentine reporting and a federal congressional resolution recorded 2.31 metres. WWE’s current profile bills him at 8 feet and 460 pounds. That figure belongs to WWE’s promotional presentation, rather than an independent measurement, so the figures should not be treated as one settled measurement.
El Gigante in WCW
WWE’s profile says U.S. wrestling audiences first saw González at WCW’s Capital Combat in 1990, where he was billed as El Gigante. The profile describes him aligning with Sting and later feuding with Sid Vicious and Ric Flair. This was a move from competitive basketball into a highly visual form of sports entertainment, where his stature became central to how promoters presented him.

Giant Gonzales and The Undertaker
González joined WWE in 1993 as Giant Gonzales. WWE says he appeared during that year’s Royal Rumble despite not being an official entrant, then became focused on The Undertaker. Their rivalry brought him to two of the era’s most visible events: WrestleMania IX and SummerSlam 1993.
WrestleMania IX
At WrestleMania IX, Gonzales confronted The Undertaker, setting up a feud built around the contrast between the two imposing characters. Their matches were part of WWE’s storytelling and spectacle; they are best understood as a high-profile rivalry, not as a measure of González’s earlier basketball career.

SummerSlam’s Rest in Peace Match
The feud continued at SummerSlam 1993 in a Rest in Peace Match. WWE’s retrospective profile identifies the event as a major meeting between them. The Undertaker program remains the most prominent part of Gonzales’s WWE legacy, although WWE’s own account is an official retrospective and should be read as the company’s characterization of its history.
Life after WWE and reported health problems
WWE says González later competed in New Japan Pro Wrestling before retiring to a farm in Argentina. A contemporaneous Wrestling Inc. report places his retirement in 1995 and attributes it to ongoing health problems. That report also described wheelchair use and dialysis for kidney failure. These accounts point to significant difficulties in his later years, but they do not provide a complete clinical record.

His death in Argentina
González died in San Martín, Argentina, in September 2010, aged 44. The Argentine Basketball Confederation (CABB), in a report dated September 24, said he had suffered a severe decompensation, had diabetes, and was receiving dialysis three times a week. A federal congressional resolution also attributed his final complication to diabetes. WWE confirms his death in September 2010 and age, but describes the circumstances more broadly as complications related to his immense size.
The sources do not establish a single exact day consistently: CABB’s report is dated September 24 and narrates his death that day, while some later summaries give September 22. Without a primary civil record, September 2010 is the most careful way to state the date. The medical details should likewise remain attributed: the Argentine accounts link the final illness to diabetes, but they are not a medical certificate.

Support and a late-life message
FIBA reported that CABB Solidarity provided support to González. In October 2009, he told FIBA: “I feel grateful to CABB Solidarity for this gesture,” adding, “It’s good that they remember me at this stage of life.” The remark offers a glimpse of the assistance he received; it was not presented as a final statement.
How to understand his legacy
González’s career crossed two very different worlds: Argentine basketball, including a national-team role and an NBA draft selection, and American professional wrestling, where his scale and character became the focus of promotion. His story should not be reduced to the fact that he was drafted but never played in the NBA. He went on to work in a different entertainment field, and his Undertaker feud gave him a lasting place in WWE’s 1993 history.

WWE calls him an “unforgettable sports-entertainment attraction” in its retrospective profile. That is the company’s own assessment. A fuller view also recognizes his athletic background, his later health struggles, and the documented support he received in Argentina.
