The real restaurant behind Netflix’s Nonnas is Enoteca Maria, opened by Joe Scaravella on Staten Island in 2007. Its idea was simple but unusual: invite Italian grandmothers to cook the regional food they knew. The restaurant later welcomed cooks from other cultures, and its current official identity is Nonnas of the World Community. The movie draws on that story, but it is a dramatization, not a documentary.
What restaurant inspired Nonnas?
Scaravella founded Enoteca Maria after losing family members and wanting to reconnect with the food traditions he associated with his mother and grandmother. The restaurant began with Italian grandmothers preparing regional recipes. Its official history describes the project as a way to share home cooking and the stories behind it. The concept grew beyond Italian cooking. According to the organization’s history, it began welcoming grandmothers from international backgrounds in 2015. Netflix’s account says the broader idea took shape earlier as a virtual recipe project, before cooks from around the world joined the restaurant in July 2015. How closely does the movie follow the true story?
Nonnas is based on Scaravella’s life and the restaurant’s premise, but its characters and plot are fictionalized. Netflix identifies the real founder and the restaurant’s 2007 opening while describing a story written for the screen. TIME likewise reports that the women characters in the movie are fictionalized and inspired by people Scaravella knew; that does not establish a one-to-one match between any character and a particular cook. For that reason, it is safer to distinguish the movie’s characters from the real grandmothers who cooked at Enoteca Maria rather than assign a film character a real cook’s biography. The people and recipes of the restaurant are documented separately in Scaravella’s cookbook, Nonna’s House: Cooking and Reminiscing with the Italian Grandmothers of Enoteca Maria, published in 2015. TIME notes that it profiles cooks from the restaurant, including its original grandmothers. It is a book about the real restaurant, not necessarily a movie tie-in.
Can you visit the restaurant from Nonnas?
Yes. The organization’s current website presents the restaurant experience under the name Nonnas of the World Community and identifies Enoteca Maria as its former name. Its booking page lists reservations at $87 per person for a three-course meal; the listed price includes tax and a 20% gratuity, and the seating limit is two hours. Older 2025 coverage described phone reservations and Friday-through-Sunday opening. Since the current official site now provides a booking link, use it for the latest availability and instructions rather than relying on an older report. The organization’s official history says the project’s 2025 Netflix debut drew 15.3 million views in its first three days and 33.3 million in its first ten days, and that it appeared in Netflix’s Top 10 in 71 countries. These are figures published by Nonnas of the World Community; the reviewed sources do not independently audit them. TIME described the restaurant as having 35 seats in a May 9, 2025 feature, a dated detail that may not reflect the venue’s current configuration.
