The Rolling Stones’ Black and Blue Super Deluxe box set is an archival package built around a new 2025 Steven Wilson mix, six previously unreleased outtakes and jams, live recordings from Earls Court in 1976, and footage of a 1976 Paris performance. Its appeal depends less on one definitive new verdict about the album than on whether you want the concert and session material, Blu-ray, and substantial printed extras alongside the remixed record.
What’s in the Black and Blue Super Deluxe box set?
Universal Music’s global announcement lists two Super Deluxe configurations: 5LP and 4CD, both with Blu-ray. The Japanese product pages give fuller package specifications, including a replica Paris concert poster; the exact details can vary by regional edition.

The Japanese listings give regional release dates and prices: the 5LP page lists November 28, 2025, at ¥38,500, and the 4CD page lists December 12, 2025, at ¥22,000. Those listings do not establish current prices or availability elsewhere.
Does it include the Earls Court concert?
Yes. The set includes live recordings from the Rolling Stones’ Earls Court performances in 1976. In the 5LP edition, that material occupies LPs 3–5; the 4CD edition presents the live program across its CDs. The Blu-ray’s concert footage is a separate item: it contains previously unreleased TV footage of a 1976 Paris performance, not a video of the Earls Court shows.

What do the new recordings and mix add?
The album disc uses a new 2025 mix by Steven Wilson. The set also adds six previously unreleased outtakes and jams, including “I Love Ladies” and “Shame, Shame, Shame,” along with four instrumental jams described by the label. These selections make the box more than a repackaging of the original album, but their value will depend on how much a listener enjoys works in progress and alternate session material.
The Blu-ray adds another listening option as well as archival video: Universal Music Japan specifies Dolby Atmos and high-resolution stereo audio. Those are format descriptions, not a guarantee of how the mix or footage will sound or look on a particular setup.

Why does this album’s history matter to the box?
Originally released in April 1976, Black and Blue was the Rolling Stones’ 13th studio album and their first after Mick Taylor’s departure, according to Universal Music. The sessions included auditions and contributions from Harvey Mandel, Wayne Perkins, Jeff Beck, and Robert A. Johnson. Ronnie Wood joined the band and appears on three tracks. In an interview included in the set, Wood recalls joining with the words, “Right then, this is where I’m meant to be.”
The album moves beyond the band’s familiar rock sound into reggae, funk, and soul. Universal highlights “Hot Stuff,” “Hand of Fate,” “Fool to Cry,” “Memory Motel,” and “Melody,” which features Billy Preston. Jagger and Richards produced the record under the name “The Glimmer Twins.” The label says the album reached number one on the US chart for four consecutive weeks and achieved immediate platinum status, and reached number two in the UK in May 1976; those chart and sales figures are Universal’s published claims.

Retrospective opinion is not uniform. Classic Rock’s 2026 year-end reissues roundup says the original album “wasn’t universally loved at the time,” and suggests the lineup found a better expression on Some Girls a couple of years later. It also points to the Jeff Beck workouts, including “Rotterdam Jam,” and the 1976 live recordings as attractions of expanded editions. That is a brief critical perspective, not a comprehensive review of this specific box.
Is the 4CD or 5LP box set the better choice?
The two editions carry the same broad program, so the practical choice is format and regional package details rather than a different core archive. Choose the 4CD edition if you want the expanded material on CD; choose the 5LP edition if you prefer vinyl and have room for a larger set. Both include the Blu-ray, book, and poster in the described Super Deluxe packages.

- Choose 4CD if CD is your preferred physical format or you want the session and live material without handling multiple LPs.
- Choose 5LP if you specifically want the album, outtakes, and live program on vinyl.
- Check the exact regional listing if SHM-CD, translated text, subtitles, poster design, or a particular vinyl specification matters to you; the Japanese pages describe regional extras that should not be assumed for every market.
- Consider a smaller edition if you mainly want the album and a selection of extras rather than the full archival package. Universal also announced 2LP and 2CD versions with album and outtakes, 1LP and 1CD versions of the 2025 mix, and a 1LP zoetrope edition.
The set is easiest to justify for listeners who want the 1976 live material and Paris footage, enjoy exploring session recordings, or value the book and photographs as part of the experience. If those extras are not important, the 2-disc or single-disc options are more focused ways to get the music.

The available product descriptions establish the formats and advertised contents, but do not establish how the 2025 mix compares audibly with earlier versions, how complete or compelling the concert performance is, or how the Blu-ray looks and sounds in playback. Those are central questions for a listening and viewing assessment, so they should not be answered from a track list or product page alone. For the same reason, the 100-page book and poster are documented inclusions, not independently assessed for print quality or presentation here.

Apple Music’s digital Super Deluxe listing, dated November 14, 2025, gives a useful sense of the expanded music program’s scale: 35 songs and 2 hours 58 minutes. That streaming listing describes the digital edition; it does not by itself confirm the running order or playback experience of either physical configuration.
