The Prince and Princess of Wales visited the Natural History Museum’s gardens in London on 4 September 2025, meeting schoolchildren involved in nature projects and joining outdoor learning activities. The museum confirmed the visit after it was announced ahead of time.
What William and Catherine did at the Natural History Museum
The couple visited the museum’s gardens, including the Nature Discovery Garden. They spoke with pupils taking part in the National Education Nature Park and joined students in activities outdoors.
Children from Kender Primary School in Lewisham and Co-op Academy Manchester took part. The Manchester students described creating new habitats on their school grounds. Catherine has been the museum’s patron since 2013, according to the Natural History Museum’s account of the visit.
What the “two months” headline means
The visit was described at the time as the couple’s first official outing in nearly seven weeks. Hindustan Times, reporting on 2 September 2025, counted from their appearance at Wimbledon on 13 July. The same report noted a family church sighting on 24 August, so the interval was between formal engagements—not a period in which they were not seen in public.

Why the museum gardens were part of the visit
The engagement connected Catherine’s role as patron with the museum’s work in education and nature. The National Education Nature Park is a Department for Education-commissioned programme led by the Natural History Museum with the Royal Horticultural Society. It helps children improve outdoor spaces for wildlife and their school communities.
The museum says its gardens serve as outdoor learning spaces and as a living laboratory for its 400 scientists. In its 4 September 2025 press release, it reported that 7,500 education settings had registered for the Nature Park—more than 25% of primary and secondary schools in England. The museum also said its transformed gardens had welcomed more than five million visitors since reopening in July 2024. These are figures reported by the museum, not independent counts.

Natural History Museum Director Dr Doug Gurr said the visit gave the royal couple an opportunity to hear how the gardens contribute to scientific understanding of urban nature and to meet young people working on nature projects through the programme.
