Billy Joel’s 104-show Madison Square Garden residency grossed more than an estimated $260 million in ticket sales, according to Pollstar’s July 2024 report. That figure is an estimated box-office gross—not a confirmed payout to Joel or his personal earnings.
What the $260 million figure means
Pollstar reported that the residency’s gross was “more than an estimate $260 million,” with attendance nearing two million. Pollstar also noted that final numbers were not yet available when it published its July 26, 2024 wrap. The figure should therefore be treated as a reported estimate of ticket receipts, not a final audited settlement. Pollstar
Box-office gross is not the same as an artist’s take-home income. The available reporting does not establish Joel’s contract share, the show’s expenses, taxes, or his personal payout. It cannot support a precise claim about how much he personally made from the run.
How the total changed during the residency
Pollstar’s June 2023 snapshot, based on Pollstar Boxoffice figures, covered 89 residency shows and reported 1,656,265 tickets sold and $207,751,097 in gross. That was a partial-run figure, not the final total. By the July 2024 wrap, Pollstar described the run as 104 shows and reported more than an estimated $260 million gross. The two figures are dated snapshots, so they should not be treated as competing final totals. Pollstar

Separately, Pollstar characterized Joel’s average gross as $4 million per MSG show over his MSG career. That figure covers his broader career at the venue; it is not a reported average for each of the 104 residency dates.
Why 104 shows and 150 appearances are both correct
The monthly residency began in January 2014 and ended on July 25, 2024, after 104 residency shows. The finale was also Joel’s 150th lifetime performance at Madison Square Garden. That larger tally includes MSG performances outside the residency, so it should not be used as the residency’s show count. Joel’s official announcement identifies July 25 as the finale and gives the lifetime milestone. Billy Joel’s official announcement

Joel’s first MSG performance was December 14, 1978. In December 2013, the Garden named him its first-ever music franchise; the monthly residency began the following month. At a June 2023 press conference announcing the residency’s conclusion, Joel said he was “kind of flabbergasted that it lasted as long as it did,” and added, “It’s hard to end, even at 150 lifetime shows.”

The Madison Square Garden residency finale was not Joel’s final concert overall. He continued touring after July 2024. In May 2025, the Associated Press reported that he canceled upcoming concerts after disclosing a diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus. That later development does not change the reported gross for the completed MSG residency. Associated Press
