MatPat stepped down as host of the Theory channels in March 2024; he did not announce that the channels were shutting down. He revealed the plan in “Goodbye Internet,” posted January 9, 2024, and said his final hosted Theory episode would be March 9. In May, he confirmed that he made his last video that day.
When did MatPat retire?
Matthew Patrick, known online as MatPat, announced his departure from hosting in the January 9, 2024 video “Goodbye Internet” on The Game Theorists channel. The planned date for his last hosted Theory episode was March 9, 2024. In a May 2024 WIRED interview, he confirmed that he made his last video on March 9.
“Retirement” is a useful shorthand for leaving the on-camera host role, not for ending all creative work or immediately disappearing from the channels. MatPat later described the transition as celebratory and thanked viewers for 13 years.
Why did MatPat step away?
MatPat described wanting a different pace after years of work-centered routines and more time with his family. YouTube Creator Liaison Rene Ritchie also characterized the transition as a step away from presenting so MatPat and Steph could focus on family, behind-the-scenes production, and developing new channels. Those were the priorities and plans described in 2024, not a comprehensive account of MatPat’s work today.

In YouTube’s March 8, 2024 post, Ritchie wrote: “To say Matt and Steph helped both revolutionize and define a generation of creators and content would not be a YouTube theory, it’s a YouTube fact.”

The available dated accounts establish the announced hosting transition, MatPat’s confirmation in May 2024 that he made his last video on March 9, and the stated interests in family, production, and developing channels. They do not establish his full project list or the present channel arrangements in October 2026. Avoid treating his departure from hosting as proof that he stopped all creative work.
