If you would rather follow the events inside the Star Wars universe, choose chronological order. Neither is mandatory; StarWars.com’s viewing guide says, “Whichever order you choose…is the right one!”
Which Star Wars watch order should you choose?

The official Star Wars Movies and Series Viewing Guide, published May 1, 2025, lists both approaches for films and series. The release-order choice here is a recommendation for newcomers, not an official rule. StarWars.com has also published a point-counterpoint on viewing preferences: fans can reasonably prefer different approaches.
Star Wars release order
For a film-only first watch, follow the films in the order they were released. To include television, shorts, and specials, use the complete release-order list in the official viewing guide: it includes the theatrical The Clone Wars film and animated and streaming series in their release sequence.
Release order preserves the way the saga’s story and reveals reached audiences over time. If you want a simpler entry point, watch the original trilogy first—A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi—then continue with the prequel trilogy and later films. Add series in release order when you want the broader franchise rather than a movie-only path.

Star Wars chronological order
Chronological order follows the events in the fictional timeline, rather than the dates the stories were released. The official list begins with The Acolyte, proceeds through prequel-era stories, the Empire and Rebellion period, and the New Republic, and ends with the sequel trilogy. For a complete movie-and-series sequence, follow the chronology in the official guide rather than trying to assign every episode to a precise slot from broad era labels.
The official Star Wars eras timeline provides context for the larger progression: the Republic and Jedi, conflict with the Sith, the Empire and Rebellion, the New Republic, and the First Order. That overview explains the broad historical framework; it is not an episode-by-episode viewing list.

Where chronological order gets complicated
Tales anthology series
Tales of the Jedi, Tales of the Empire, and Tales of the Underworld tell anthology stories across a wide stretch of time. Each appears as one entry in the official list, so that placement cannot represent the timeline of every episode.
Andor and Rebels
Andor and Star Wars Rebels take place concurrently and both lead into Rogue One, according to the official viewing guide. You can follow the guide’s broad sequence, but the two series’ timelines overlap.

Resistance
Star Wars Resistance begins before The Force Awakens and continues beyond it, straddling the start of the sequel era. Treating the series as a single point in a list simplifies that overlap.
The Clone Wars
Star Wars: The Clone Wars is set between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, but the episodes do not all follow their broadcast sequence chronologically. For episode-level viewing, use Lucasfilm’s official chronological episode order, which includes the theatrical movie.

Where to watch
The official viewing guide identifies Disney+ as a home for Star Wars movies, series, shorts, and specials. Catalogues and access can vary by country and change over time, so check Disney+ in your region for current availability before planning a watch-through.
