YouTube offers three distinct ways for eligible creators to receive viewer support around live content: Super Chat highlights a paid chat message, Super Stickers put a paid animated image in live chat, and channel memberships exchange recurring monthly payments for channel-specific perks. They have different eligibility rules and serve different kinds of audience participation; qualifying for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) does not by itself guarantee access to every feature.
How Super Chat, Super Stickers, and memberships differ

YouTube describes Supers as purchases viewers make to highlight messages or surface an animated image in live chat. Super Chat and Super Stickers are available for eligible live streams and Premieres. Memberships follow a different model: members pay monthly in exchange for perks the creator offers. Neither format is universally better; consider whether your audience is more likely to value a moment of visible participation or continuing member benefits. Who can turn on YouTube fan funding?
YouTube’s baseline Commerce Products requirements say a channel must be in YPP, the creator must be at least 18, and the creator must be in a location where the specific feature is available. The creator must also accept the applicable Commerce Product Module (or have accepted the prior Commerce Product Addendum), comply with the relevant terms and policies, and enable the feature in YouTube Studio. Availability and requirements can differ by feature and location, so check the current feature criteria for your account rather than assuming one feature’s approval covers another. Do you need 1,000 subscribers for memberships or Supers?
Not necessarily. YouTube Help’s monetization overview, accessed October 2026, lists an expanded YPP tier with 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the past 90 days, and either 3,000 qualifying long-form watch hours in the past 365 days or 3 million qualifying Shorts views in the past 90 days. That tier lists memberships, Supers, Super Thanks, and Shopping, subject to each feature’s own criteria.

The same overview lists a separate tier with 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualifying long-form watch hours in the past 365 days or 10 million qualifying Shorts views in the past 90 days, alongside additional monetization features. These are YPP program thresholds, not a guarantee that an individual channel or video can use every feature. Check the current overview and your Studio account because requirements may change. How do I turn on Super Chat, Super Stickers, or memberships?
- Check your channel’s current access: open YouTube Studio and select Earn. Review the available feature cards; YouTube says Supers appear there for creators who have access.
- Confirm the baseline requirements: verify YPP status, the creator’s age, location availability for the particular feature, and acceptance of the applicable Commerce Product Module or prior Addendum.
- Review the feature-specific criteria: use the current official feature information and the eligibility details shown in Studio. Meeting an expanded or full YPP threshold alone does not ensure access.
- Enable the feature in Studio: follow the on-screen setup for each feature that is available to your channel. Memberships require creator-defined perks; consider what your channel can consistently provide before offering them.
- Check each live stream or Premiere: for Supers, make sure the video and chat meet the restrictions below. A feature being enabled on the channel does not make every video eligible.
YouTube’s live-stream guidance recommends choosing revenue sources that fit both the audience and the content. Why is Super Chat unavailable on a live stream?
Super Chat and Super Stickers are unavailable for a video if it is any of the following, under YouTube’s current help page:
- Age-restricted, unlisted, or private.
- Made for Kids.
- A YouTube Giving fundraiser.
- Live chat or comments are turned off.
Geographic availability also applies. If a Super is missing, check the video’s settings and chat status first, then confirm that the channel and relevant audience location are supported and that the feature remains enabled for your account. What creators and viewers should know about Supers
A Super is not a donation
YouTube explicitly says Super Chat and Super Stickers are not crowdfunding or donation tools. Creators and viewers should not describe them as donations or assume a particular legal or tax treatment; users remain responsible for applicable laws. Do not assume an earnings percentage
The current official pages cited here do not establish a creator revenue-share percentage for these features. The amount a creator receives should not be inferred from what a viewer pays; consult current YouTube terms for applicable payment details.

These are not YouTube’s only revenue options
YouTube’s monetization overview also lists ad revenue, Shopping, YouTube Premium revenue, and Super Thanks. Each has separate requirements, so access to one source of revenue does not establish access to the others. YouTube Help: Choose how you want to monetize — Computer.
