You can use an old PC to relay an already-encoded stream to YouTube with MediaMTX, but whether it can also encode a camera or screen feed depends on its hardware. The route is source or encoder → MediaMTX path → YouTube RTMPS. Install the version for your operating system, configure YouTube’s current ingest URL and your private stream key, then test the complete stream and upload connection before relying on it.
What MediaMTX does—and what the PC must do
MediaMTX is a media server and proxy that routes real-time audio and video. It supports Linux, Windows, and macOS and is distributed as a single executable; Docker is another documented installation option. See the MediaMTX introduction and installation guide.
First decide whether the old PC will encode the original camera or screen feed, or merely relay a stream that another device or application has already encoded. Encoding can place substantial demands on the CPU or GPU; relaying an encoded stream is a different workload. The documentation does not specify minimum PC requirements or guarantee that a particular old machine can encode reliably. Without its model, operating system, source, and an actual test, no resolution or frame-rate promise is defensible.
Check YouTube eligibility and collect the live settings
YouTube’s general requirements say the channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16 years old. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance for the channel’s current status.

- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the current server URL and stream key shown there. MediaMTX’s forwarding guide gives an example ingest address, but explicitly advises checking that the example is still current; use the address YouTube gives your stream.
- Treat the stream key as a password. Do not post it, share it publicly, or include it in screenshots or public configuration files. YouTube describes it as the password and address for the feed in its live stream settings guide.
No India-specific encoder setting or setup exception is established in the official guidance cited here. Your account status and the upload speed and reliability of your particular ISP connection matter more than the country label alone.
Install and configure MediaMTX
1. Install the version for the PC
Use the standalone MediaMTX executable that matches the PC’s operating system and architecture, following the official installation instructions. Docker is also documented, if the host can run it. Pin a release if you need repeatable deployments; otherwise, check the current installation instructions for the appropriate build and launch method.

2. Add a path that forwards to YouTube
MediaMTX’s forwarding guide shows this configuration pattern:

- dest: rtmps://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2#streamKeyReplace the example destination with YouTube’s current RTMPS server URL and your stream key, with # separating the URL from the key as in the documented pattern. Replace mypath with the path your source or encoder will publish to. Consult MediaMTX’s forwarding documentation for the current configuration syntax and notes.

The documentation example includes a certificate fingerprint because of a certificate-validation issue reported when that example was updated. Do not copy an old fingerprint blindly: check the current MediaMTX instructions and certificate conditions before using one. Keep the configuration containing your key private.
3. Start the source and check that the forwarded feed has audio and video
Have your encoder or other source publish to the configured MediaMTX path, then start MediaMTX and check the YouTube preview and stream health in Live Control Room. The outbound YouTube feed must contain both video and audio; MediaMTX warns that YouTube silently rejects video-only streams. If your source has no audio, configure an audio track rather than assuming video alone will be accepted.

Choose encoder settings the PC and connection can sustain
If the PC encodes the source, choose settings based on the encoder’s actual capabilities and a sustained connection test—not its age alone. YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video with AAC or MP3 audio. Use a codec combination your encoder supports. The current YouTube live encoder settings page lists these recommended H.264 video bitrates:

YouTube’s current guidance also recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio. These are YouTube recommendations, not evidence that your PC can encode at those settings or that your connection can sustain them.

Measure upload capacity with headroom
Run a speed test and assess sustained upload performance, preferably while the network is being used in the way it will be during the stream. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom and warns that other users and applications sharing the connection can constrain the stream. Its streaming tips and encoder settings guidance recommend testing and monitoring stream health. A single speed-test result does not establish that the connection will remain stable for a long broadcast.
If the stream is unstable, lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and test again. If the PC is only relaying an already-encoded source, distinguish a network or source problem from an encoding bottleneck; test CPU, memory, and sustained network behavior with the real stream. These checks are practical troubleshooting, not a guarantee of performance on an untested machine. If the PC supports a wired connection and Wi-Fi is unreliable, an Ethernet connection may be worth testing; it cannot guarantee a particular upload speed.
Troubleshooting common failures
