You can run MediaMTX as a systemd service on Ubuntu and forward a source stream to YouTube over RTMPS. The service can start when the host boots, but that alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast: the Ubuntu host, network, source, and YouTube ingest all still need to work. This guide covers the relay setup, the checks that matter, and how to test recovery before relying on it.
What MediaMTX does—and what it does not
MediaMTX is a media server and proxy: a source publishes a stream to it, and MediaMTX can forward that stream to a destination such as YouTube. Its documentation describes it as a “media router” focused on routing streams efficiently and portably. It is available as a single executable for Linux, Windows, and macOS. See the MediaMTX introduction.
For this setup, MediaMTX runs on an Ubuntu host, your video source supplies a stream, and YouTube receives the forwarded stream. MediaMTX can keep a path available while its publisher is offline, but that does not mean it creates video by itself or guarantees that YouTube will receive a continuous broadcast. A 24/7 YouTube live stream depends on the whole chain.
What you need before configuring it
- An Ubuntu host using systemd, with a reliable power source and network connection. If you rent a VPS or dedicated server, check its outbound-transfer terms, network route to the YouTube ingest endpoint shown in Studio, restart controls, monitoring options, and your ability to maintain Ubuntu. No hosting provider or plan is established here as guaranteeing YouTube uptime.
- The MediaMTX executable and YAML configuration file for the release you choose. Check the current official documentation and release before following version-specific commands; the configuration reference identifies its documented version as v1.21.1, which may change. See the configuration file reference.
- A source that can publish to MediaMTX or otherwise provide the stream you intend to forward. For example, MediaMTX’s FFmpeg guide covers publishing to local RTMP and RTSP paths, including looping a file in real time.
- Access to your channel’s current live-stream settings in YouTube Studio, including the ingest URL and stream key. Check the URL in Studio rather than assuming an endpoint from an older example remains current.
- A source stream containing both audio and video. MediaMTX’s YouTube forwarding guidance warns that YouTube requires both tracks and may silently reject a video-only stream.
Whether your channel is eligible to go live, which endpoint YouTube currently assigns, and any account or encoder requirements applicable to your situation are not established by MediaMTX’s documentation. Verify them in YouTube Studio and current YouTube Help material before planning a broadcast.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Install MediaMTX and configure systemd
MediaMTX’s Linux boot guide uses a global-path pattern: put the executable under /usr/local/bin/, the YAML configuration under /usr/local/etc/, then define and enable a systemd unit. Confirm the current release’s download and configuration details in the official start-on-boot guide before adapting the pattern. Paths and network management can differ between Ubuntu installations.
- Obtain the current MediaMTX release. Download the Linux executable and matching configuration using the current official instructions. Install them at the paths you intend to use, for example
/usr/local/bin/mediamtxand/usr/local/etc/mediamtx.yml. Ensure the executable has permission to run and that the service account can read its configuration. - Create a systemd unit. The guide’s sample uses
ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/mediamtx /usr/local/etc/mediamtx.ymland installs the unit under themulti-user.target. Adapt its full unit definition to the current guide and your chosen account and paths; do not assume a sample is a security-reviewed fit for every host. - Reload systemd’s unit definitions. After creating or changing the unit, run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadso systemd reads the updated file. - Enable and start the service. Run
sudo systemctl enable mediamtxto configure startup at boot, thensudo systemctl start mediamtxto start it now. These are separate actions: enabling does not by itself start the current process. - Check its status and logs. Run
sudo systemctl status mediamtxand inspect recent journal output withsudo journalctl -u mediamtx. Resolve configuration, permissions, or network errors before moving on.
The official guide recommends enabling systemd-networkd-wait-online.service so startup waits for network initialization. Whether that is appropriate depends on how networking is managed on your Ubuntu host; check the host’s network service before enabling it. systemd boot startup helps bring MediaMTX back after a host reboot, but does not prevent the host or network from failing.

Forward the stream to YouTube
Configure a MediaMTX path to forward its incoming stream to the RTMPS destination and stream key shown in your channel’s current YouTube Studio live settings. The MediaMTX forwarding guide documents the YouTube forwarding pattern and explicitly cautions operators to check YouTube’s current URL. Do not copy an old endpoint blindly.
- Open YouTube Studio and locate the current live-stream connection details for the broadcast.
- In the MediaMTX configuration, set the forwarding destination for the path that receives your source. Follow the current MediaMTX forwarding syntax and use the current RTMPS URL from Studio.
- Insert the channel’s current stream key only in the protected configuration location required by the forwarding setup. Treat it as a password: do not put it in a public repository, screenshots, shared logs, or messages. Restrict access to the configuration file.
- Apply the configuration using the service procedure appropriate to the current MediaMTX release, then check
systemctl status mediamtxand the journal for parsing or connection errors.
The stream key authorizes delivery to your channel. If it is exposed, rotate it in YouTube Studio and update the protected MediaMTX configuration. Avoid printing credential-bearing configuration in troubleshooting output.

Test the full path before leaving it unattended
- Start the source and confirm it is publishing to the MediaMTX path you configured.
- Check MediaMTX’s service status and logs for a successful source connection and forwarding activity.
- Open the live preview or status in YouTube Studio and confirm that the intended channel receives the stream.
- Confirm the source contains both video and audio. MediaMTX warns that YouTube may silently reject streams without audio, even when video is present.
- Test a controlled MediaMTX restart and a source disconnect/reconnect. Confirm that the source can publish again, forwarding resumes, and YouTube returns to the expected live state before relying on unattended operation.
These checks are operational advice, not a claim that a particular host, source, or YouTube channel has been tested. Keep an independent way to inspect the host and YouTube Studio when the stream is supposed to be live.
What “24/7” requires operationally
Enabling the service makes systemd start MediaMTX at boot; MediaMTX can also serve an always-available path while its publisher is offline. Neither capability is an uptime guarantee for the Ubuntu machine, its power and internet connection, the source, or YouTube. Plan for each point of failure.

- Host or power failure: systemd can start the service after a reboot, but cannot keep an unavailable host running. Know how you will restore or replace the host.
- Network interruption: monitor connectivity and confirm what happens to both the source-to-MediaMTX connection and MediaMTX’s outbound connection to YouTube when the link returns.
- Source interruption: an always-available MediaMTX path does not supply new content when the source is absent. Check whether your intended source can reconnect and whether the resulting behavior is acceptable.
- YouTube disconnect or ingest change: inspect the current Studio status and MediaMTX logs. Verify the configured destination against Studio if forwarding stops.
- Configuration or credential change: update the protected configuration, reload or restart as required, and verify the forwarding path again.
MediaMTX documents authentication, recording, metrics, and performance monitoring features in its introduction. Those are operational capabilities, not a service-level agreement or proof of uninterrupted delivery. Set up monitoring that can alert you when the service or broadcast stops, and periodically verify the YouTube-side live status.
