To stream through MediaMTX and FFmpeg from Windows to YouTube Live, use MediaMTX as a relay: FFmpeg publishes a video-and-audio stream to a MediaMTX path, and MediaMTX forwards that path to the RTMPS URL and stream key supplied by YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, and it requires both audio and video. The official examples document these building blocks, but not a fully tested, end-to-end Windows installation and firewall recipe; check the commands, paths, and network rules against the Windows build you install.
How do I stream to YouTube with MediaMTX and FFmpeg on Windows?
The relay has two connections: FFmpeg sends media to a named path on MediaMTX, then MediaMTX sends that path to YouTube. MediaMTX documents an FFmpeg publishing example and a separate YouTube forwarding configuration. Use the current Windows package’s executable and configuration syntax; the examples below show the documented configuration model and FFmpeg command, not a verified Windows-specific setup.
- Prepare a YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key for that stream. If you want encryption, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL rather than relying on the ordinary RTMP URL shown by default. Stream URLs and keys are specific to a stream; verify them in Live Control Room on the day you publish. See YouTube’s streaming setup guidance.
- Choose the media source and confirm its tracks. Your input may be a video file or another source that FFmpeg can read. Make sure the stream will include both an audio and a video track. MediaMTX warns that YouTube silently rejects video-only streams. A file with no audio track needs an audio track added before publishing.
- Configure a MediaMTX path to forward to YouTube. In the MediaMTX configuration, associate the path you intend to publish—such as
mystream—with a forwarding destination using YouTube’s current RTMPS URL and stream key. MediaMTX’s example represents the destination and key together in adestvalue, separated by#. Treat that as configuration syntax, not a reason to paste a key into public logs or share the configuration. The example endpoint on the MediaMTX page may reflect the value present when that page was last updated; your Live Control Room value is authoritative. See MediaMTX’s YouTube forwarding example. - Start MediaMTX. Run the Windows executable using the configuration file you prepared. MediaMTX documents configuration validation with
./mediamtx --validate-conf=/path/to/mediamtx.yml; that is general syntax, so confirm the executable name and Windows path syntax for your package before copying it. The configuration reference describes hot reload when possible. See the MediaMTX configuration reference. - Publish from FFmpeg to the local MediaMTX path. MediaMTX documents this example for publishing a looping file to a local RTMP path:

This command is suitable only when the input streams are compatible with the path and YouTube requirements. If the source lacks audio, has an unsuitable codec, or needs filtering or conversion, copying the streams will not fix that; use FFmpeg processing appropriate to the input instead. See MediaMTX’s FFmpeg publishing example. - Check YouTube’s preview and stream health. Confirm the incoming picture and sound in Live Control Room before starting the public broadcast. Watch stream health while it runs, especially after changing the source, encoder settings, or network.
Where do I get my YouTube stream key?
Get it from the stream’s Live Control Room in YouTube Studio when you create or schedule the live stream. Copy the key and matching stream URL shown there; use the RTMPS URL if you want an encrypted connection. Do not assume that a saved key or URL from an older broadcast is current for a newly created stream. If a key may have been exposed, reset or replace it in Live Control Room and update MediaMTX’s forwarding destination.

Which video and audio settings should I use?
Use settings that YouTube supports and your internet connection can sustain. YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so do not treat one number as suitable for every stream. As one current YouTube table example accessed in 2026, 1080p at 30 fps using H.264 has a 5 Mbps minimum and a 14 Mbps recommended bitrate. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for your chosen format. Test upload capacity and allow headroom for normal network variation; a stream bitrate that repeatedly exceeds available upload bandwidth can produce buffering or a degraded connection.

Why is YouTube not receiving my stream?
Trace the relay one connection at a time rather than changing several settings at once.
- No local publish: Check that MediaMTX is running, FFmpeg can reach the configured local address and RTMP port, and the path in the FFmpeg URL matches the path in the MediaMTX configuration.
- MediaMTX receives media but YouTube does not: Recheck the stream-specific URL and key against Live Control Room. Confirm the forwarding destination uses the current endpoint and the key is separated and escaped as MediaMTX configuration expects.
- SSL error: Verify that the destination begins with
rtmpsand matches the current RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room. YouTube’s help guidance says specifying port 443 may help with an SSL error, but use the URL and port provided for the stream rather than assuming a port. - YouTube shows no usable picture or sound: Confirm the source and FFmpeg output contain both tracks, then inspect the preview and stream health. YouTube silently rejects video-only streams.
- Connection drops or the picture buffers: Check whether the selected bitrate is sustainable on the actual upload connection. Re-test with representative video motion and audio; lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the upload cannot reliably support the chosen settings.
- Configuration does not load: Check the Windows package’s configuration path and syntax, then use MediaMTX’s validation option with the correct executable and Windows path form.
Should MediaMTX forward natively or should FFmpeg handle forwarding?
For the documented relay, FFmpeg publishes to MediaMTX and MediaMTX forwards the path to YouTube. That keeps the local publishing command separate from the destination. MediaMTX’s documentation also describes using FFmpeg for forwarding when the destination needs transcoding, filtering, or a protocol that MediaMTX’s native forwarding does not support. Transcoding adds processing load and requires settings appropriate to the source and YouTube; use stream copying only when the input is already suitable.

Copyright and YouTube live eligibility
Having a technically valid stream key does not grant rights to the video or music in a loop. Use only material you own or are licensed to broadcast, and check YouTube’s live-stream and copyright requirements for your account and content. Repeating a recording is a delivery method, not an exemption from copyright or YouTube’s policies. Review the copyright safety checklist before scheduling a long-running stream.
